George Hoppert – Lid nr. 13

Frederick George Hoppert het in 1929 op 25-jarige ouderdom begin jag. Sy eerste groot jagtog was in 1932 toe hy en ‘n taksidermis vriend, William G Shilvock, in Portugees-Oos Afrika (Mosambiek) gaan jag het om trofeë te versamel vir George se sitkamer. Tussen 1934 en 1948 het hy ook in verskeie ander gebiede gejag en onder meer ‘n swartwitpens in Swaziland geskiet. Hy was ook ‘n gereelde biltongjagter in die ou Noord-Transvaal.

Dit was by sy huis in Johannesburg waar die eerste gesprek plaasgevind het wat tot die stigting van die Vereniging in Mei 1949 sou lei. Hy was vervolgens dan ook ‘n stigterslid, asook die eerste visevoorsitter van 1949 tot 1956.

’n Vriend van George in Mosambiek, ene senhor Quessada, het hom voorgestel aan dr Mario Alcantara, hoof van die Salazar-skool en ook president van die land se wild- en jagowerheid, Commissao de Caça. Hulle het goeie vriende geword wat ook jagte na die buurland oopgemaak het.

In 1952 het George Hoppert en sy medelid dr Vercuiel weer in Mosambiek gejag. Daarna het George ook elke jaar op die plaas Antwerpen (vandag deel van Timbavati) van Ernie Ballack in Oos-Transvaal gejag.

Teen ongeveer 1970 het probleme met sy sig dié pionier egter gedwing om sy geliefde gewere te bêre. Hy is ses jaar later op die ouderdom van 72 in sy slaap oorlede.
