What are the prerequisites to own a firearm?

  • South African citizenship
  • 21 years of age
  • No criminal record
  • No charge of negligent use of a firearm
  • Valid competency certificate following successful completion of the prescribed firearm competency training at an accredited training institution for the specific firearm
  • Valid licence or permit for that particular firearm issued in terms of the Firearms Control Act

How does SA Hunters assist members with firearm licences?

SA Hunters supports its members in complying with the legal requirements to own and use a firearm.

How do I apply for a competency certificate?

  • The applicant must be a South African citizen.
  • Complete the relevant proficiency training at an accredited training centre before applying for a competency certificate.
  • Apply at SAPS with the required documents. Go to Application for Competency here.

When do I apply for the renewal of an existing firearm licence?

  • Submit a renewal application at least 90 days before the expiry date of the current firearm licence. Read more here Firearm Licence Applications

Are green licences still valid?

  • The old green firearm licences issued under the previous firearms act is still valid. However, if the holder of a green firearm licence applied for a firearm licence (white licence) in terms of the Firearms Control Act (Act 60 of 2000), it is argued that the green licence is no longer valid. When is an airgun considered to be a firearm?

An Airgun is defined in the firearm act: “Airgun’ means any device manufactured to discharge a bullet or any other projectile –

  • of a calibre of less than 5.6 (.22 calibre); or
  • at a muzzle energy of less than 8 joules (6ft-lbs), by mean of compressed gas and not by mean of burning propellant”
