Frequently asked Questions

keeping you informed – OUR FOCUS

Does SAHGCA assist members with firearm licenses?

SA Hunters supports its members in complying with the legal requirements to own and use a firearm.

What is the procedure for application for a new firearm license?

PREREQUISITES TO OWN A FIREARM

  • Must be a South African citizen
  • Be at least 21 years old
  • Have no criminal record
  • Have no charge against him/her of negligent in using of a firearm
  • Have a valid competency certificate that indicate he/she successfully completed the prescribed firearm competency training provided by an accredited training institution for the specific firearm
  • Have a valid license or permit for that particular firearm issued in terms of the Act

What is the procedure for the renewal application for an existing firearm license?

Renewal application must be submitted at least 90 days prior to the expiry of current firearm licences.

What is the procedure for application for a competency certificate?

Prior to applying for a competency certificate the applicant must successfully complete the relevant proficiency training at an accredited training centre.

The applicant must be a South African citizen.

Are green licences still valid?

The old green firearm licences issued under the previous firearms act is still valid. However, if the holder of a green firearm licence applied for a firearm licence (white licence) in terms of the Firearms Control Act (Act 60 of 2000), it is argued that the green licence is no longer valid.

There is a logical assumption that the old green licences would be declared invalid at some point. Meanwhile, SA Hunters advises members with old green licences, to apply for their firearm licences in terms of the new Act, and to comply with the requirement of submitting a valid competency certificate with their application.

When is an airgun considered to be a firearm?

An Airgun is defined in the firearm act:

“Airgun’ means any device manufactured to discharge a bullet or any other projectile –

a) of a calibre of less than 5.6 (.22 calibre); or

b) at a muzzle energy of less than 8 joules (6ft-lbs), by mean of compressed gas and not by mean of burning propellant”
