Inyathi Park News April 2023

10 May 2023

Dear colleague

Structure of newsletter

We start with the new, essential information first, followed by the regular news.

Therefore, members can get up to date with fresh news first and read other information later.

We delayed distribution of this newsletter to include information that we deemed to be important. Following the final meeting of the board of directors and the AGM of the SA Hunt Publishing (Pty) Ltd, which previously included Media 24, we can now confirm that SA Hunter and Magnum as well as the publishing company, are now fully owned by SA Hunters.

I write this newsletter while I am sitting on the banks of the Kunene river, approximately 20 km west of Ruacana. This part of the world is pristine and relatively untouched by humans. It is indeed a privilege to be here.

Lapua Grouping Shoot Final

The final event in the Lapua Grouping Shoot will be held on 22 July 2023 at the Excalibur shooting range at Sandrivier 58 Branch in Welkom. The winners of the trials will be receiving their invitations soon.

Availability of Somchem gunpowder

Rheinmetal Denel informed us that loadshedding impacted badly on their production of gunpowder. However, they will try their best to make gunpowder available to reloaders.

Conservation

New SA Red Data Species List

The data assessment of mammal species for the South Africa’s Red Data species list has started. This information is crucial for various conservation activities and the drafting and implementation of conservation policy.

SA Hunters is participating in this process. We request members to enter information and records of rare and threatened species on the SA Hunters App. Members with iPhones, can upload the information on their personal profile on the member administration system.

Personal information remains anonymous, and all data will be handled with utmost care by the Manager Conservation. Data will also be considered for branch evaluation. Information is required on specifically the following species: Suni, Red Duiker, Blue Duiker, Mountain Reedbuck, Grey Rhebok, Oribi, Pangolin, Black-footed Cat, African Wild Cat, Civet, Serval, Aardvark, Honey Badger, Brown Hyena, Spotted Hyena, Bat-eared Fox, Cheetah, Wild Dogs, and Leopard.

Data provided on the distribution of Klipspringer in the Springbok area has already been beneficial.

Battle of the Bullets

The Battle of the Bullets held at Royal Karoo Safaris near Steytlerville  in the Karoo on 15 April was a huge success. It was the second in a series of information days that SA Hunters, EWT, Blue Ballistics, and local landowners organised to inform hunters and landowners about the detrimental effects of using leaded ammunition on humans and on wildlife. The benefits of leadfree alternative mono-metal ammunition were also discussed.

Ballistics and Impala Bullets also attended. Attendees had the opportunity to try out the efficacy and accuracy of various alternative types of ammunition. This particular venue was chosen because Rob Birch of Royal Karoo Safari’s decided a while ago, to switch over to a lead-free hunting experience for the benefit of birds of prey and other scavengers, and to ensure safe game meat without lead fragments that are environmentally friendly and sustainable.

A short video of the testing of the ammunition, is available at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MsjTfEbzE4M&t=7s
