Conservation

TOPS Species

The Department Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment recently published hew TOPS regulations that include the management plan for elephant and the norms and standards for the hunting of leopard in South Africa

The new regulations were due for implementation on 1 April 2023, but following an urgent court application by WRSA and PHASA to prevent the implementation thereof, it was agreed not to implement the regulations at this stage. More consultation will follow.

Read a summary on the implication of the new regulations here.

Hunting affairs

Shortage of anti-snakebite venom

Johan Marais of the African Snakebite Institute informed us that there is a shortage on anti-snakebite venom. Available antivenom is only available for human use. Take care when handling snakes or coming across snakes while hunting.
