Public consultations in November will discuss the national conservation strategy and biodiversity plans for leopard, cheetah and lion
The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) is developing and reviewing several conservation tools in line with the recently published White Paper on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of South Africa’s Biodiversity (published for implementation in June 2023) and the policy position on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Elephant, Lion, Leopard and Rhinoceros (published for implementation on 24 April 2024).

Die Departement Bosbou, Visserye en die Omgewing (DBVO) ontwikkel en hersien verskeie bewaringshulpmiddels in pas met die witskrif oor die bewaring en volhoubare benutting van Suid-Afrika se biodiversiteit. Openbare konsultasieforums is vir November geskeduleer waar die publiek insette kan lewer oor die nasionale bewaringstrategie en bestuursplanne vir luiperds, jagluiperds en leeus (soos gepubliseer vir implementering op 24 April 2024).
The tools include:
- The Leopard Conservation Strategy
- The Leopard and Cheetah Biodiversity Management Plans (BMPs)
- The African Lion BMP
As part of this process, the DFFE will hold face-to-face stakeholder consultation sessions in provinces, and a series of virtual sessions with local communities, role-players in the wildlife sector, and landowners towards developing these tools.
Dates of virtual sessions
- 4 November 2024 (MS Teams/Zoom) for leopard specialists, academics, and conservation NGOs (veterinary and welfare)
- 5 November 2024: MS Teams (meeting link to follow) for the wildlife industry, game farmers, agriculture, hunting, tourism, and captive breeders
The sessions will include an introduction to the development of the tools mentioned above. Participants will have the opportunity to engage in discussions on the following key aspects:
- What value do leopards, lions and cheetahs have for you?
- What are the constraints in realising those values?
- How can we address those constraints?
