Konvensie oor Internasionale Handel in Bedreigde Spesies (CITES)

SA Jagters het aan die openbare konsultasieproses deelgeneem ter voorbereiding van CITES COP20 om lede se belange te verteenwoordig en gesonde bewaringspraktyke te bevorder. Suid-Afrika se voorstelle wat aanvaar is, sluit in die verwydering van die bontebok (Damaliscus pygargus pygargus) van Bylae II en die skuif van twee vetplantspesies – Avonia quinaria and Euphorbia bupleurifolia – van Bylae II na Bylae I weens druk van onwettige internasionale handel.

CITES se aanvaarding van die Bontebok-voorstel bewys dat samewerking op die gebied van bewaring deur  wildboere, jagters en die regering die bewaringstatus van inheemse spesies verbeter.

Bontebok kom natuurlik voor in die fynbosbioom waar geskikte habitat bevolkingsgroei beperk. Met die uitbreiding van hul verspreidingsgebied kom 75% van die diere nou buite hul natuurlike verspreidingsgebied voor. Hierdie bewaringsukses spruit uit wildboere se toewyding aan doeltreffende bestuur van habitat en spesies en verantwoordelike en volhoubare jag se waardetoevoeging tot spesies en finansiering van bewaringsinisiatiewe. Die regering voorsien die regsraamwerk wat die private sektor in staat stel om inkomste uit volhoubare benutting vir bewaring aan te wend.

 

CITES het egter voorstelle vanuit die Suider-Afrikaanse streek verwerp om die internasionale kommersiële handel in renosterhoring (Namibië se voorstel) en olifantivoor (Namibië se voorstel vir geregistreerde voorraad) te heropen. Suid-Afrika het nie ’n handelsvoorstel ingedien nie. Ten spyte van ’n positiewe bewaringstatus vir kameelperde was voorstelle om internasionale handel in kameelperdprodukte verder toe te laat of te fasiliteer ook onsuksesvol. Nuwe riglyne is aanvaar vir spesies wat intense druk ervaar weens wildmisdaad, asook vir jagluiperds.
