Draft National Elephant Heritage Strategy for South Africa

Elephants are part of our unique natural heritage in Africa. The unprecedented increase in elephant numbers across Southern Africa is placing increasing pressure on sensitive habitats and species. The capacity and policy positions of the government limit the effective management of the impact of growing elephant populations on both private and state land.

The recent incident where approximately 80 elephants died of starvation in the Madikwe Game Reserve highlights the extent of the crisis in managing our elephant populations. The high cost of conserving and managing elephants limits the options for their relocation. Even when elephants are offered for free, there are no takers. Although contraception has limited the growth of some elephant populations, the increase is still higher than what available habitats can sustain. With policy documents restricting and complicating management options, authorities and stakeholders in South Africa must engage seriously in managing elephant numbers that benefit healthy ecosystems and the long-term conservation of our wildlife.

SA Hunters is participating in the processes to develop a new National Elephant Heritage Strategy for South Africa. The DFFE published the draft strategy (Draft National Elephant Heritage Strategy) in the Government Gazette on 27 January 2025 for public comment. Members can submit their comments directly to the Department at the address provided in the document and copy our conservation office at lizanne@sahunt.co.za
