This year’s theme, Sustaining all life on earth, encompasses all wild animal and plant species as a component of biodiversity as well as the livelihoods of people, especially those who live closest to nature. It also underlines the importance of sustainable use of natural resources in support of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals that relate specifically to water, land, relieving poverty, and promoting sustainable use.
Sustainable development refers to the manner in which humans use natural resources such as soil, water, plants and animals to meet their daily needs, but without undermining the integrity and stability of these natural systems, and without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
The year 2020, is also known as biodiversity super year and places biodiversity at the forefront of the global sustainable development agenda which creates numerous opportunities to implement processes for the conservation and sustainable use of wild animals and plants.
World Wildlife Day was announced in December 2013, when the United Nations General Assembly adopted a proposal by Thailand to implement a special day every year on 3 March to raise awareness of the world’s fauna and flora.
All South Africans can contribute towards sustaining all life on earth by adopting good habits and adapting their lifestyles to the benefit of the environment such as:
using water sparingly;
- recycling wisely; and
- avoiding pollution by not using harmful plastic products such as shopping bags and drinking straws.
SA Hunters subscribes to both sustainable development and sustainable use of natural resources. Through its members and branch activities, the Association is actively involved in many worthwhile initiatives that support the principles of sustainable use and contribute to conservation. SA Hunters encourages its members to:
- act responsibly when they enjoy nature, whether they are hunting, camping, fishing, cycling, hiking, or birding;
- actively involve young people to experience the wonder of nature through outdoor activities that teach them to appreciate, conserve and protect plants and animals; and
- spend their money wisely by choosing outdoor activities that support sound wildlife management practices that protect and conserve the natural resources for future generations to benefit from.
Vandag, 3 Maart is Wêreld Wildlewe Dag
- water spaarsaam te gebruik;
- die natuurlike omgewing verantwoordelik te geniet, hetsy dit jag, kampeer, hengel, fietsry, staptogte of voëlkyk is;
