Call for comment on NDFs for some animal and plant species
The Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) invited the public to comment on the non-detrimental findings (NDF) regarding certain animal and plant species including elephant, hippopotamus, leopard, cheetah, and cycad species. These findings are made in terms of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), as made by The Scientific Authority according to the National Environmental Management: Biodiversity Act, 2004.
Why it is important to comment: Trade, including the export of hunting trophies, are regulated through TOPS (Threatened and Protected Species Regulations) and CITES. The scientific authority monitors the legal and illegal trade in specimens of listed threatened or protected species and advises the Minister on making non-detriment findings that indicate whether or not the trade will be detrimental to the survival of the species. This will ultimately impact the sustainable use and international trade in these species, including the export of hunting trophies.

Oproep vir kommentaar oor NDF’s vir sommige diere- en plantspesies
Die Minister van Bosbou, Visserye en die Omgewing (DBVO) nooi die publiek uit om kommentaar te lewer op die nie-nadelige bevindinge (NDF) met betrekking tot sekere dier- en plantspesies, insluitend olifant, seekoei, luiperd, jagluiperd en broodbome. Hierdie bevindinge word gedoen ingevolge die Konvensie oor Internasionale Handel in Bedreigde Spesies van Wildlewe en Flora (CITES), soos aanbeveel deur die wetenskaplike gesagsowerheid volgens die Wet op Nasionale Omgewingsbestuur: Biodiversiteit, 2004.
Hoekom dit belangrik is om kommentaar te lewer: Handel, insluitend die uitvoer van jagtrofeë, word gereguleer deur TOPS (Bedreigde en Beskermde Spesies Regulasies) en CITES. Die wetenskaplike gesagsowerheid monitor die wettige en onwettige handel in diere- of plante van bedreigde of beskermde spesies en adviseer die Minister wat dan die nie-nadelige bevindinge maak wat aandui of handel nadelig sal wees vir die oorlewing van die spesies. Dit sal uiteindelik die volhoubare gebruik en internasionale handel in hierdie spesies, insluitend die uitvoer van jagtrofeë, beïnvloed.
