4 June 2024
Dear colleagues
The hunting season is in full swing, although the winter weather is shy to arrive. The night temperatures are dropping, but the days are comfortably warm at around 22°C to 24°C. We want to bring a few matters to members’ attention.
CEO is stepping down
We informed members last month about the CEO’s retirement later this year. To date, we received very few applications. Therefore, the Board decided to resend the notice to members. Information about the position is available here and the closing date for applications is 30 June 2024.
Kind regards
Fred Camphor
SA Hunters: CEO
Professional hunters and outfitters should note that the SAQA unit standard for professional hunting expire on 30 June 2024. Technically it means that the qualification of professional hunters and outfitters will no longer be valid from that date. A process has been put in place to retain this qualification through recognition of prior learning. For more information on how this works, please read here.
As the CEO, I was assigned temporarily to oversee the publishing of the May edition of SA JAGTER/SA HUNTER. I undertook to inform members of the changes in this regard. Early in 2024, a disagreement arose between Francois van Emmenes, the former editor of SA JAGTER/SA HUNTER, and the Board of SA Hunters. The dispute was settled amicably with the result that Francois is no longer editor of the magazine. I want to thank Francois for his work as editor and wish him well in his future endeavours.
SA Hunt Publishing (Pty) Ltd is the owner and publisher of SA JAGTER/SA HUNTER. The board of directors reappointed Johan van Wyk as editor on a contractual basis. Welcome back, Johan! We are looking forward to many more editions of SA JAGTER/SA HUNTER.
At HuntEx2024, SA Hunters offered prizes to members and non-members for certain activities at the show. The lucky winners of these prizes are:

Legal firearm ownership is one of the main focus areas of SA Hunters. The Association provides a comprehensive support service to its members to ensure that they always act within the confines of the firearms legislation, whether they are hunters or sport shooters. SA Hunters has a dedicated firearms help desk to answer questions and assist with training requirements; applications for competency certificates, firearm licences, renewals and endorsements; storage permits; and temporary import/export permits.
Visit the Application Process for Firearm Licences page for everything you need to know about legal firearm ownership.
To date, only 5 835 of SA Hunters’ 12 711 dedicated hunters have registered two activities to retain their status for 2024. There are also 10 942 dedicated sport shottists of whom only 3 680 have registered three activities for retaining their dedicated status for 2024.
We remind members to please register their activities, should they wish to retain their dedicated status. The SA Hunters App facilitates the registration process, making it quite simple.
SA Hunters accepts any two of the following activities towards retaining dedicated hunter status:

SA Hunters, SANSSU and SATRA will introduce various shooting disciplines at a combined shooting day at the Eufees shooting range in Voortrekkerhoogte on 15 June 2024. SA Hunters and these two associations agreed to combine their efforts to promote shooting activities among junior shottists in particular.
Read here for more information, or direct queries to Boetie Kirchner or 082770-9378.
The 2024 rules for regional and national shooting competitions are available on the SA Hunters website. There is a separate section with specific rules for each shooting discipline. For easy reference, the rule modifications from 2023 to 2024 are highlighted in yellow.
Hunting licences for the Northern Cape used to be available through the Post Office. However, the closure of many Post Offices made it almost impossible to obtain hunting licences for this province. The good news is that hunting licences for the Northern Cape can now be purchased online. The application form and more information is available here.
FMD broke out in the vicinity of Humansdorp and Jeffreys Bay where some farms have been quarantined. Unfortunately, no further information is available about any restrictions on the transport of meat in any magisterial districts. We advise members to be careful and rather call landowners to enquire about any FMD restrictions before embarking on hunting excursions in this area. Read more here.
Both the bird hunting packages offer members a futher R750-00 discount per person.
SA Hunters’ project that markets accredited hunting packages among its members is already quite well-known. According to reports on social media, many hunters are misled by fraudsters who advertise non-existing hunting opportunities.
With this project, the association puts its members who own hunting farms directly in contact with members who are hunters. In this way, the interests of both game farm owners and hunters are protected.
Paid-up members who own hunting farms can contact Boetie Kirchner at boetiek@sahunt.co.za for more information about the hunting destinations project.
Some packages are sold out and new packages where added. Keep an eye on this page for continues updates.
SA Hunters supports a national survey on wild giraffe populations undertaken by the Giraffe Conservation Foundation. We call on members to complete the surveys. More information is available here.
The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment published the NEMBA amendment bill for public comment. We draw members’ attention to the definitions for animal wellbeing and humane practices included in this bill. Read here for more information about the amendments and submitting comment.
The staff at SA Hunters Shop are back at work after exhibiting at HuntEx and Nampo and are ready to serve members. We trust that our presence at these two major shows benefits our industry and the people we serve. SA Hunters had been absent from Nampo for a few years, but our return this year was a positive experience.
With Father’s Day around the corner, consider a gift voucher here from SA Hunters Shop for the men in your life to choose a suitable gift for themselves. For every gift voucher you purchase, a free book (a variety of books) is included.

Send your recipe including a short background (e.g., it was your grandma’s recipe), a photograph of you and your dish, the ingredients and method. Any recipe is welcome as long as game meat is one of the ingredients. Send it to boetiek@sahunt.co.za or marette@sahunt.co.za
