DEDICATED STATUS HUNTERS AND SPORT SHOOTERS
SA Hunters’ dedicated firearm helpline assists members in legally complying to own a firearm. Our support services include in-house training, electronic systems for member administration, automated processes for endorsements, and reminders for licence renewals.
SA Hunters’ activities are automatically uploaded to each member’s profile on the member administration system, which records their official activities to maintain dedicated status.
SECTION 16 APPLICATION IN TERMS OF THE FIREARMS CONTROL ACT
- Dedicated hunter and/or sport shooter status
- Handgun, shotgun, rifle, hand carbine (semi outomatic)
- No restriction on the number of firearms
- No restriction on the number of rounds of ammunition
- Firearm licences are valid for 10 years, except for handguns for self-defence are valid for 5 years
- Dedicated sport shooters must report any three shooting activities annually to maintain status
- Dedicated hunters must report any two hunting activities annually to maintain status
Period of Validity for Firearm Licences
- Handgun for self-defence – 5 years (Section 13)
- Occasional hunting and sport shooting – 10 years (Section 15)
- Dedicated hunting and sport shooting – 10 years (Section 16)
- Professional hunting – 10 years (Section 16A)
- Business as a game ranching or hunting– 10 years (Section 20)
- Business other than game ranching or hunting– 5 years (Section 20)
- Possession of a muzzleloader – 10 years (muzzleloader competency required)
About Dedicated Status
A person with dedicated hunter and/or sport shooter status may own more than four firearms, a self-loading or semi-automatic rifle, and more than 200 rounds of ammunition per licence.
The firearm owner must obtain dedicated hunter and/or dedicated sport shooter status before applying for a Section 16 firearm licence.
Although the Act is more lenient towards persons with dedicated status, it simultaneously places more responsibility on a person with dedicated status.
A dedicated hunter must participate in and report on at least two prescribed hunting activities during the year. A dedicated sport shooter must participate in and report on at least three prescribed events on the shooting range or sport shooting activities during the year.
Every dedicated hunter and/or sport shooter must maintain his/her status by reporting on his/her activities by 31 October every year.
Activity Report
To maintain your dedicated hunter status
SA Hunters accepts any two of the following activities towards retaining dedicated hunter status:
- Any hunting opportunity
- Attending any official activity hosted by SA Hunters
- Any other organised shooting activity where shottists sign an attendance register
- Any private shooting exercise (informal shooting event)
- Completed hunting report on the online member administration system
- One reloading activity
- Visit to HuntEx
Any official branch or shooting event of SA Hunters are recorded on the branch tablet and automatically reflects on the members personal profile. It is members’ responsibility to record their participation in hunting excursions and shooting activities at another accredited association on the online member administration system as part of the requisite annual activity report.
To maintain your dedicated sport shooter status
SA Hunters accept any three of the following activities to retain their dedicated sport shooter status:
- Any official shooting activity of SA Hunters such as a branch shooting day (member’s branch or as a visitor at another branch), any regional or national shooting event.
- Any shooting event at any other accredited sport shooting association
- Any other organised shooting activity where shottists sign an attendance register at the shooting range.
- Any private shooting event (Shooting event informal)
- One duty assignment as a range officer
- One reloading activity for shottists that reload
- Attendance at HuntEx
