Dear colleagues
Spring is in the air! National shooting competitions are being held weekly. We are also preparing for the NBCF and Congress on 1 and 2 November.
Members with dedicated hunter and sport shooter statuses have until the end of October to register activities on the online member administration system or app to retain their status.
The two commemorative rifles specifically manufactured to celebrate SA Hunters’ 75th anniversary, are nearing completion. Not many tickets have been sold to date. 1 October 2024 SA Hunters turned 75. The association was established during a meeting at the National Zoo in Pretoria on 1 October 1949. The Board of SA Hunters agreed on the following activities to commemorate this milestone:
The programme for SA Hunters’ 2024 congress at the CSIR Convention Centre will include the following:
This year, branches can invite guests to attend the dinner at R1,500 per person. There is still time until 12 October to book your guest with Dorothy Els. This promises to be a special event to celebrate SA Hunters’ 75th anniversary.
SA Hunters will cover the costs for delegates who book in advance to attend the congress. Please plan your attendance at this event.
All required documents have been sent to delegates on 2 October 2024, as required by our constitution and the internal rules, and are available at the branch chairpersons. Phone us if you have any queries in this regard.
Few things excite hunters and shottists more than a beautiful rifle. To celebrate SA Hunters’ 75th anniversary, the Association commissioned the production of two bespoke rifles in the classic Rigby style in .275 and .416 calibres with stocks of Turkish walnut wood.
Two members stand a chance to win these rifles in a lucky draw. Tickets cost R50 each with no limit to the number of tickets per person.
The rifles will be built in the classic Rigby style and calibres – a .275 Rigby (7×57), valued at around R80,000, and a .416 Rigby valued at around R180,000.
You do not have to be present at the draw. The winner will be notified by telephone.

The Association provides a comprehensive support service to its members to ensure that they always act within the confines of the firearms legislation, whether they are hunters or sport shooters. SA Hunters has a dedicated firearms help desk to answer questions and assist with training requirements; applications for competency certificates, firearm licences, renewals and endorsements; storage permits; and temporary import/export permits.
Visit the Application Process for Firearm Licences page for everything you need to know about legal firearm ownership.
The following national championships for qualifying shottists will take place in October:
at the Excalibur shooting range, Welkom, hosted by the Sandrivier-58 Branch.
The Browning National Shotgun Championship was concluded on 14 September 2024 at the Wattle Springs Sport Club. Judging by the scores, the competition was fierce, but there could only be one winner! Jacques van Rooy walked away with the honours. But winning isn’t everything, and all the participants did their best.

SA Hunters’ top junior shottists competed in the National Cartridge/SA Hunters National Junior Shooting Championship on 27 and 28 September 2024 at the Excalibur shooting range in Welkom, Free State. Boerewors or droëwors is a favourite snack among South Africans. Nowadays, most butcheries and supermarkets sell a variety of flavours to satisfy every taste. But nothing is as delicious as your own boerewors or droëwors, made with meat from the game you hunted yourself. Fred Camphor shares his favourite recipe for homemade braaiwors and droëwors. The recipes are almost the same, with just small variations in the ingredients and method. Follow Fred’s valuable tips for the best wors, and you’ll never buy wors from the butcher again!
If you are a hunter, you most probably have a favourite recipe that you could be famous for. You can even be our first SA Hunters game meat chef. This is a long-term project to encourage members to get involved.
We plan a dedicated section on our website and our Facebook page to share members’ cooking talents. Send your recipe including a short background (e.g., it was your grandma’s recipe), a photograph of you and your dish, the ingredients and method. Any recipe is welcome as long as game meat is one of the ingredients. Send it to Marette.
Freddy Hirsch’s spices for biltong, boerewors, dry wors and burgers can be ordered directly from the SA Hunters Shop. Members qualify for discounts on all Freddy Hirsch products. Order online here.
The Freddy Hirsch Group is sponsoring hampers to give away in our game meat recipe challenge. The sooner you enter your game meat recipe, the better your chance is to win one of these hampers.
The 2024 Photography Competition is currently underway and running smoothly. We have received several impressive buffalo photos for the new category, and members find the new entry method very convenient. All the changes made to the competition are thoroughly outlined in the information and rules.
You can also take a look at the photographs that already received awards in different the categories in 2024.
Contact Marette for any inquiries.
The theme of our next exciting challenge is action and movement. These include humans, animals, birds, reptiles, and insects in nature in Southern Africa. The action/movement may be frozen, or blurred, as long as the audience experiences the feeling of action and movement. This challenge will require members to apply different techniques.
Do invite members in your branch, friends, and family to join the group. The photography club is a friendly, interactive community where members can submit suggestions and comments. Click the link to join.
