3 July 2024
Dear colleagues
Winter arrived slightly late but made up for it with chilly nights and days. At least it is perfect weather for hunting and meat processing.
Recruitment of chief executive position
Over the previous two months, we informed members that the CEO would retire at the end of 2024. At its meeting late in June, the Board of SA Hunters postponed the recruitment process until the end of the year. Members will be kept informed of the process.
Kind regards
Fred Camphor
SA Hunters: CEO
SA Hunters will celebrate its 75th anniversary in October 2024. The association was established during a meeting at the National Zoo in Pretoria on 1 October 1949. The Board of SA Hunters agreed on the following activities to commemorate this milestone:
The programme for SA Hunters’ 2024 congress at the CSIR Convention Centre will include the following:
Branches will be able to invite guests to attend the dinner. The cost of guests attending the event is R1500 per person. This promises to be a special event.
SA Hunters will cover the expenses of delegates who book in advance to attend the congress. Please diarise these dates to ensure your attendance.
The Board of SA Hunters decided to celebrate the association’s 75th anniversary with two custom-built rifles in classic style and calibres, that members can win in a lottery. The two rifles, – a .275 Rigby (7X57) and a .416 Rigby – will be manufactured in the classic Rigby style using prime grade Turkish Walnut for the stocks. Read more here about these rifles.
The SA Hunters shop also has several items available to commemorate the Association’s 75th anniversary.
These include a quality tin mug (R90); porcelain coffee mug (R80); black golf/shooting range towel (R90); embroidered caps in grey, light blue, and khaki (R110); printed caps in navy blue (R60); and refrigerator magnets (R35.)

We remind members of the Board’s decision to produce a limited series of knives to pay tribute to living former presidents of SA Hunters.
The 25 knives in Oom Nic van der Merwe’s choice are sold out. Thank you to the members who purchased these knives.
There are only five knives left, all with ivory handles, in the second series of 25 numbered knives representing the preference of Oom Peet van Zyl. Please place your order now to avoid disappointment.
To order, do an EFT of R2 500 in SA Hunters’ bank account at Absa, account number 01443990077. Use your member number and Peetmes as reference.
The next option in the knife series is the preference of Remy Mulder. Production will start soon.
To order, follow the same procedure as described above. Remember to use Remymes and your member number as the reference when depositing R2 500 in SA Hunters’ bank account at Absa.

We are nearing the end of the financial year. With the price of everything increasing, we have no choice but to adjust the membership fees. We trust that SA Hunters provides satisfactory services to members and branches countrywide. The Board of SA Hunters approved the adjustments to the membership fees effective on 1 July 2024.

National Women’s Day (9 August) is just around the corner. As in the past, SA Hunters and the branches will celebrate this day. Check here for special shooting days for women that some of our branches will host that weekend.

The national office has a few SA Hunters gift packs to give away. To stand a chance to win one of these gift packs, send a photo of yourself (or a selfie) in nature, while out on a hunt, or at the shooting range (or behind the camera). We will make a collage of all these special photographs.
Send your photo to dorothy@sahunt.co.za or marette@sahunt.co.za. Women can also post their photos on their branch pages on Facebook with the hashtag #SAHunterswomensday. Also, tag Dorothy or Marette.
Legal firearm ownership is one of the main focus areas of SA Hunters. The Association provides a comprehensive support service to its members to ensure that they always act within the confines of the firearms legislation, whether they are hunters or sport shooters. SA Hunters has a dedicated firearms help desk to answer questions and assist with training requirements; applications for competency certificates, firearm licences, renewals and endorsements; storage permits; and temporary import/export permits.
Visit the Application Process for Firearm Licences page for everything you need to know about legal firearm ownership.
To date, only 6 910 of SA Hunters’ 12 869 dedicated hunters have registered two activities to retain their status for 2024.
There are also 11 218 dedicated sport shottists of whom only 4 635 have registered three activities for retaining their dedicated status for 2024.
We remind members to please register their activities, should they wish to retain their dedicated status. The SA Hunters App facilitates the registration process, making it quite simple.
SA Hunters accepts any two of the following activities towards retaining dedicated hunter status:

The Impala Branch of SA Hunters will host two events at the Bluegum Valley shooting range on 27 Julie 2024 and 3 August 2024 respectively, to present the International Gallery Rifle Federation shooting disciplines. Semi-automatic .22 rimfire rifles, lever action rifles and pistol calibre carbines are traditionally used in these events. Phone William Chandler at 083-302-4758 for more information.
The 10 m Junior air pistol shooting exercise can now be used at branch level. The shooting exercise makes provision for the age groups under 9, under 13, under 16, and under 18 years. Read the rules here. The scores are available on the branch tablets.

The event was marked by reunions of old acquaintances, who met on the range for the first time in years. Shottists as young as 7 years old participated in an organised shooting competition for the first time. A total of 88 shottists participated in this unique fun shoot. Everyone agreed that this event needs to become a regular occasion. View the photo’s here.

SA Hunters informed professional hunters last month that the SAQA unit standard for professional hunters will expire on 30 June 2024. However, the registration date for the recognition of prior learning has been postponed to 30 June 2025 giving professional hunters more time to register.
For more information on how this works, please read here.
We reported last month that hunting licences in the Northern Cape are now available via e-mail. Unfortunately, several members sent the application form to more than one officer, which caused confusion about who should issue the permit. Members should send their application form for a hunting permit to only one of the available officers closest to where they live or intend to hunt.
The application form and more information is available here.
Both the bird hunting packages offer members a futher R750-00 discount per person.
SA Hunters’ project that markets accredited hunting packages among its members is already quite well-known. According to reports on social media, many hunters are misled by fraudsters who advertise non-existing hunting opportunities.
With this project, the association puts its members who own hunting farms directly in contact with members who are hunters. In this way, the interests of both game farm owners and hunters are protected.
Paid-up members who own hunting farms can contact Boetie Kirchner at boetiek@sahunt.co.za for more information about the hunting destinations project.
Some packages are sold out and new packages where added. Keep an eye on this page for continues updates.
The revised Biodiversity Management Plan (BMP) for black and white rhino in South Africa, published for public comment on 18 June, provides a legal framework for the conservation of rhinos that will benefit the species, the private sector, and local communities. The poaching of rhinos for their horns remains the biggest threat to their survival in South Africa. Read the BMP and submit your comments on this important document.

During the next few months, many of our members will be on their annual hunting excursion where they might be fortunate to spot rare and endangered species. Please report your sightings on SA Hunters’ Sightings App. This information provides important data for researchers.
