6 August 2024
Dear colleagues
July reminded us that we are actually in the middle of winter.
Last weekend, I had the privilege of joining friends on a springbok hunt in the De Aar area. None of us ever thought about buffalo until two grumpy buffalo bulls surprised three of us while we were looking for trophy springbok rams on the Karoo plains. This made me realise once again that you must be wide awake in the veld, as the unexpected happens. One hunter’s knee was badly injured and needed medical intervention, while the rest of them have bruises, body aches and pains. However, they survived to tell the story.
Read more in the July newsletter about two new special offers with Jonsson Workwear and Dorper VSOP Cape Brandy and all the competitions that SA Hunters has negotiated for members. August is Women’s Month and SA Hunters is going out of its way to spoil our women members. Check out the sport shooting calendar for August to October when our top shottists will compete for the championship titles.
Kind regards
Fred Camphor

SA Hunters submitted comments on the Draft National Environmental Management: Biodiversity Bill 2024, published by DFFE in the Government Gazette 50706 on 24 May 2024. The Association is particularly concerned that DFFE left most of the core aspects to be addressed in regulations, lists, notices, and norms and standards for publication at a later stage. The inherent limitations in the DFFE’s public participation processes are worrying.

The conservation manager, Lizanne Nel, participated in a work session on the Draft White and Black Rhino Biodiversity Management Plan (DRBMP) She stressed the important role of the private sector in the recovery of rhinos in South Africa. She also raised concern that the DRBMP does not sufficiently highlight this aspect and build on its successes while addressing the challenges. Mechanisms are needed to incentivise rhino owners who conserve free-ranging populations in their natural habitat and contribute the most to the species’ long-term survival and conservation status. Private rhino owners cannot harness any value from keeping rhinos, including their commercial value. This impedes their ability to finance business and conservation operations. Reference to hunting in particular is lacking.

By this time, hunters’ freezers are probably filled with game meat. If you should run out of recipe ideas, try Dorothy Ras’ favourite kudu curry complemented with nutritious vegetables that you can prepare in a jiffy in an electric steam pot, or at your leisure in a cast iron potjie while exchanging hunting stories.
View our game meat recipe page for this recipe and more.
If you are a hunter, you most probably have a favourite recipe that you could be famous for. You can even be our first SA Hunters game meat chef. This is a long-term project to encourage members to get involved.
We plan a dedicated section on our website and our Facebook page to share members’ cooking talents. Send your recipe including a short background (e.g., it was your grandma’s recipe), a photograph of you and your dish, the ingredients and method. Any recipe is welcome as long as game meat is one of the ingredients. Send it to boetiek@sahunt.co.za or marette@sahunt.co.za
Freddy Hirsch’s spices for biltong, boerewors, dry wors and burgers can be ordered directly from the SA Hunters Shop. Members qualify for discounts on all Freddy Hirsch products. Order online here.
The Freddy Hirsch Group is sponsoring hampers to give away in our game meat recipe challenge. The sooner you enter your game meat recipe, the better your chance is to win one of these hampers.
The 2024 Photography Competition is currently underway and running smoothly. We have received several impressive buffalo photos for the new category, and members find the new entry method very convenient. All the changes made to the competition are thoroughly outlined in the information and rules.
You can also take a look at the photographs that already received awards in different the categories in 2024.
Contact Marette for any inquiries.
The theme of our next exciting challenge is action and movement. These include humans, animals, birds, reptiles, and insects in nature in Southern Africa. The action/movement may be frozen, or blurred, as long as the audience experiences the feeling of action and movement. This challenge will require members to apply different techniques.
Do invite members in your branch, friends, and family to join the group. The photography club is a friendly, interactive community where members can submit suggestions and comments. Click the link to join.

Dorper VSOP is a Cape brandy created as a flagship product by Dorper Gin, with one of South Africa’s leading distillers, situated in Grabouw.
This exceptional brandy is a blend of Chenin Blanc and Colombard grapes from the Western Cape. It undergoes double distillation in copper pots and is then aged for five years in small French or American oak barrels. The result is a complex brandy with floral and nutty aromas and hints of dried peaches, apricots, and tropical fruit flavours. It offers a balanced, lingering fruity taste.
Members of SA Hunters can now purchase the Dorper VSOP pot-distilled brandy for only R400, including delivery.
To order, please email Divan Lamprecht with “SA Hunters” in the subject line or call Divan at 081-543-7964. Divan is the owner of Dorper Gin and a member of SA Hunters, and your support is appreciated.
