Photography News July 2021

Membership of the SA Hunters Photography Klub is growing steadily. The club is open for all members of SA Hunters, their family and friends that share SA Hunters’ interests and values. Feel free to invite people to join.

The theme of our June photo challenge was #stofpad. Members shared 120 photographs of dust roads, dirt roads, two track roads, sandy roads, muddy roads and others to compete in this challenge. Martiens Enslin was the winner and will receive his prize Kalahari Photo Tips by Hannes Lochener, donated by SA Hunters. The winning photograph can be viewed here.

The theme for the July photo challenge is #big3 and members are invited to share their photographs of elephant, buffalo, and rhinoceros. The rules are simple:
*must be photographs of elephant, buffalo and rhinoceros
*mark the photograph as #big3 (to enable admin to find it at the end of the month)
*share the photograph’s information: where (rhinos only province), when, camera, smart phone model, camera setting (F-stop, ISO, shutter speed)
The prize for the winner of the July photo challenge will be announced soon.

Training is one of the benefits off club membership. The first online session on Focus and shutter speed will be presented on Friday, 16 July from 19:00 to 21:00 to be repeated on Saturday afternoon, 17 July from 15:00 to 17:00. The first half of the session is in lecture format and followed by a question-and-answer session. Attendance is free, but members must register via e-mail at sahuntphoto@gmail.com and indicate which session they wish to join.

SA Hunters Photography Competition

The SA Hunters Photography Competition received a record number of entries in June of which 34 photographs received acknowledgement. We decided to divide categories in two divisions, namely a DSLR/mirrorless camera section and a smart phone section. The main category is for DSLR (digital single lens reflective) or mirrorless photographs.

In the DSLR category, Edmund Hatting, Leon du Plessis, Mienkie Liversage and Tommy Liversage received gold acknowledgements. Twelve entries received silver, 5 bronze, and two entries were highly commendable. In the smart phone category, 4 entries received silver acknowledgment; 4 bronze, and 1 highly commendable. View the photographs here.

The categories for entries are:
1) Conservation in Action (DSLR or smart phone)
2) Plant and animal life (DSLR or smart phone)
3) Our cultural heritage (DSLR or smart phone)
View the rules and information here.

Photography training

SA Hunters wishes to promote the development of photographic skills and approached professional photographers to provide training. Marette Bennett and Brett Stanley of Refined Edges Wildlife Photography and Training will present photography workshops and individual training. Tommy and Mienkie Liversage completed the course as a test run in March and were highly impressed with what they have learnt. The quality of their photographs taken at Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park improved considerably and were suitable for glossy magazines.

Because of the third wave of Covid-19, the workshops will only start later in the year when it’s safe to do so again.  SA Hunters agreed to 25% discount for members at R2800. The non-member cost is R3800. Therefore, it is worth your while to join the Association to benefit from this discount. Only eight people will be accommodated per workshop. Space will be limited and it is best to send an intention to attend in advance to Marette Bennett to avoid disappointment. Branches that wish to make group bookings can also contact Marette Bennett. Members that prefer individual training, qualify for 15% discount of the regular price. Interesting parties and for more information can send a email to Marette Bennett at sahuntphoto@gmail.com for contact on 082 553 4719.

Kind regards
Marette Bennett
