  1. Buffalo hunt competition

On 1 November 2022, a few minutes after 10:00, the lucky draw for the winner in the much anticipated SA Hunter Rhino Bullets buffalo hunt competition was held in the presence of Mr Patrick Magoro of the National Lottery. Mr Gert van Schalkwyk of Van Sitterts auditors, which is SA Hunters auditors, was also present to verify the information. The winner is Lawrence Meintjes. I phoned him at 10.31 to give him the good news that he had won the competition. The news spread like wildfire on social media with the inevitable nasty comments. Anyone is welcome to check the process followed to determine the winner. A video recording of the draw is available on the SA Hunter Facebook page.

  1. SA Hunters Shop

The SA Hunters’ shop at Inyathi Park that has been doing business for many years, has been improved and includes a new product range. The new shop will open on 14 November 2022. Customers can expect special offers that will be welcome Christmas presents. All members’ whose membership fees are fully paid up, will qualify for 10% discount on any item.

  1. Loadshedding and telephones

Although loadshedding has been reduced recently, SA Hunters experience problem with its telephone system. We resolved some of them, but interruptions still occur. A better UPS will be installed next week which we hope will improve the situation. If you cannot reach us on the regular number (012 808 9300) try any of the following numbers:

New messages

  1. Shooting AffairsShotgun shooting

Following the Browning SA Hunters Shotgun Championship, three teams were chosen to participate in the SA Fitasc Compak Sporting Grand Prix at Hippo Creek shooting range on 15 and 16 October 2022. These teams did extremely well. Three of SA Hunters’ shottists were among the Top 20. Congratulations to all the teams with their wonderful achievement.

4.1. Other national sport shooting events

In October 2022, we also held other national shooting competitions, including:  

  • National Limited Bolt Action Competition (15 October 2022)
  • National MDS competition (19 – 22 October 2022)
  • National Sport Shooting competition and & IGRF (27-29 October 2022)

The winners in each of the various classes and categories of these competition were announced and congratulated on SA Hunters Facebook page. The list of names is too long to include here. Congratulations to all.

Thanks to every sponsor that contributed to the success and convenience of these competitions. Sandriver 58 Branch hosted this year’s competition at the Excalibur shooting range. Thanks to every member of this branch and the other branches that helped to ensure the success of this event.

4.2. Zeiss/Lammergeier Gong Shooting Competition

Lammergeier Branch has been hosting the annual gong shooting competition since 2008. This competition is held in the veld and comprises 30 shots over unknown distances to simulate hunting. This is a popular competition and draws about 200 shottists every year. As usual, the branch management went out of their way to host this event and to draw sponsorships. Effort is also made to attract participation by women and junior members. On Saturday,  22 October 2022, 196 shottists in  49 teams participated.

Zeiss sponsored this year’s competition and donated two binoculars and two scopes as prizes in a lucky draw. Two women won two Zeiss scopes, and two men won the Zeiss binoculars. The combined value of these items is R50 000.  Thanks to the Carl Zeiss company for this special sponsor.   

  1. SAHGCA Congress 2022

The SA Hunters Congress will be held at the SA Hunters national office on 5 November 2022 as a virtual event. Representatives should have received their congress documents by now. Anyone that has not et received it, must enquire from their branch chairperson.

Representatives are reminded to download the SA Hunters smart phone App before the time. Make sure that it works and that you know how to use it. All voting during the Congress will be done using the smart phone App according to the numbers that representatives provided on registration.

In November 2022 Humansdorp Koöperasie offers 10% discount on all Walther barrels to members of SA Hunters.

7.1. Membership

Recruit member for commission

SA Hunters’ membership is at 42 724.

Every member or a branch that recruits ten or more members per year, can earn commission of between R100 to R150 per member. More information is available here. (MM lankal aangestuur)

The Board also agreed that branches that succeed in resigning up lapsed members, will also benefit from the commission. More information has been sent to Branch chairpersons.

SA Hunters distribute member application forms to various dealers. These forms are also available from Dorothy Els by dorothy@sahunt.co.za

7.2. Photography club

The photography club is still gaining popularity. Read more about the club, training opportunities and monthly competitions and prizes here.  It also provides information about the Photographer of the Year competition.

7.3. Doctari knives

The Doctari ivory knife project will end soon There are only 8 knives left.

A limited quantity of knives was made with handles from ivory from the Nico van Rooyen collection. Place your order now for that special Christmas gift, to avoid disappointment.

7.4. Memorial publication

Only copies of the memorial books with the hard covers are still available at R300 per copy.

  • Transfer the correct amount (R300 for the ordinary version or R1 000 for leather bound version) in SA Hunters’ bank account at Absa, account number 01443990077.

Use your member number and Book as reference. Check that you enter your member number correctly to ensure that we can process your order

7.5. Buck knives

There are only 25 items left in this limited series of 500 Buck knives at R1 000 each. These knives have ivory inlays on the handle with the SA Hunters logo engraved.
