Photography Newsletter 9 February 2022

New in this newsletter:

SA Hunters Amateur Photography Competition

The 2022 Photography Competition covered the period from October 2021 to 30 September 2022. The entries received were of a very high standard. Seven members received gold certificates.

In October we received 40 entries of which 24 photographs received acknowledgement. Congratulations to Pierre van der Berg with 5 gold awards in the Fauna and Flora DSLR/ML section, and to Bornman for a gold in the Fauna and Flora smart phone section.

In November we received 40 entries of which 15 photographs were awarded. Congratulations to Monique Potgieter with two gold awards in the ‘’At the shooting range’’ section and a gold in the Fauna and Flora DSLR/ML section. Leon du Plessis received one gold and Pierre van der Berg received four gold certificates in the Fauna and Flora DSLR/ML section.

We combined December and January as one competition for which we received 60 entries. Gold certificates in the Fauna and Flora DSLR/ML section were awarded to Rachelle van Niekerk and Danie Erasmus with one gold each, Tommy Liversage and Edmund Hattingh with two each, Leon du Plessis with three and Pierre van der Berg with certificates. Sasha Bornman received a gold in the Fauna and Flora smart phone division. Congratulations to all!

December and January

Members whose photographs earned gold, silver or bronze awards can download their certificates from the member profile on the website. They will also receive a separate digital certificate for each award. Members can order gold, silver or bronze badges through their branch offices. It is similar to the shooting badges.

The new categories in the 2022 Amateur Photography Competition are:
1) Fauna en Flora DSLR/mirrorless
2) Fauna en Flora Smart Phone
3) Branch activities
DSLR/mirrorless/smart phone
4) On the Shooting Range
DSLR/mirrorless/smart phone
5) The Hunt
DSLR/mirrorless/smart phone (people and animals during the hunt, but not photographs of hunted animals. Send your photographs of trophy and hunted animals to bokspog@sahunter.org for Bokspog in SA Jagter/SA Hunter. REMEMBER to adhere to firearm and hunting safety measures when taking photographs under these circumstances.)

  • Entries must include only one photograph per e-mail.
  • Send entries with the information below to sahuntphoto@gmail.com:
    1. Name and surname
    2. SA Hunters member number
    3. SA Hunters Branch
    4. Mobile number
    5. E-mail address
    6. Entrance category
    7. Location where photograph was taken
    8. Title of photograph
    9. Camera and lens model (lens not applicable for mobile phones)

      (Tip: Cut and paste the 9 requirements above in your e-mail text box of every entry)
  • Photographs must be bigger than 2MB but smaller than 6MB.
  • All meta data must be visible. Do not block it.
  • Smart phone photographs must by aspect ratio 3:4 wees. Full frame photographs are not accepted.
  • Smart phone photographs must be taken without filters and special effects

  • Photography challenge

Landscapes – November:
The theme for the November photo challenge was #landscapes.  Approximately 200 photographs were published.

My Best Photo – December and January:
We combined the December and January photo challenge with the theme #mybestphoto. Members shared 150 of their top photographs.

Old – February:
The theme of the February photo challenge is #old. It includes forgotten, broken, rusted, history, heritage, vintage, retro. Click here for the Facebook link, and here for the SA Hunters’ website.

The rules of the photo challenge are simple:

1) a photograph of any old item,
2) one photo per entry/upload,
3) unlimited number of entries per member,
4) participant must be a member of SA Hunters and/or the SA Hunters Photography Club.
5) it must be your own photograph,
6) label the entry as #old (to assist admin to find it easily at the end of the month.)
7) Entries must include the following:

  • Title of photo
  • Place where it was taken
  • Date of when it was taken
  • Camera or smart phone model
  • Camera settings (F-stop, ISO, shutter speed), not for smart phones.

At the end of the month, the group admin selects the best photographs posted on the Facebook group page and publishes in an album on the website. Members choose the winner. The book prize for the photo challenge is sponsored by SA Hunters. The title will be announced later in February.

SA Hunters members that do not have a Facebook profile but who wants to enter the challenge, can enquire at sahuntphoto@gmail.com or send your photographs with the relevant information required and your personal details to the same e-mail address with #old in the subject line.

  1. Photography Club Cover Page

Boetie Kirchner’s photo of the lovely farmhouse in the Free State was on the cover page for the Photography Club in 2021.

The first cover page for 2022 is Sasha Bornman ‘s Pearl Spotted Owl. Edmund Hattingh’s photograph of late afternoon in the Tuli Block Botswana is the most recent winner.

Admin chooses a new cover page for the Photography Club’s Facebook page every fortnight. We are looking for horizontal photographs that are striking yet simple, with sufficient space for wording. Members may enter suitable photographs by marking them #coverpic.

  1. Photo stories

Members of SA Hunters are invited to send their photo stories to sahuntphoto@gmail.com with the subject PHOTO STORIES

A photo story includes the following:

  • A series of 4 photographs or more
  • Photos must all be 2mb or bigger
  • No watermarks or framed photos will be accepted.
  • A paragraph that tells the story
  • Information must include what, where, when, why, and everything else that is interesting.
  • Camera and lens information.

Sasha Mulder’s photo story about Batsha the Elephant was the Photography Club’s first photo story. View it here for an example of a good photo story. The management of the Photography Club will assess the entries based on quality and compliance with the rules.

SA Hunters’ members can manage their newsletter options here for receiving the monthly photography newsletter. The newsletter will appear under general news for a while, but will soon be sent under its own category, Photography.
