SA Hunters Photography Club

The SA Hunters Photography Club is a huge success and the Facebook group’s membership numbers grow daily. The SA Hunters Photography Club is open to all members of SA hunters, as well as family and friends who share the SA hunters’ interest and values. The purpose of the club is to promote photography on a social level through enthusiasm and participation.

The theme for the August month photo challenge was #flowers. Members submitted more than 180 photos of the most beautiful flowers for the challenge. The winner of the #flowers photo challenge is Steven Kruger. Steven wins the beautiful book: Scenic South Africa, by Sean Frazer, sponsored by SA Hunters.

The September Photo Challenge’s theme is #birds.

The photo challenge rules are simple:
* It must be a picture of a bird/birds and must have been taken by yourself,
* Mark the photo #birds (in order for admin to easily find it at the end of the month),
* Include all the photo information:
-specie
-where
-when
-camera or smartphone model
-camera adjustments (F-stop, ISO, shutter speed).

The prize for the September photo challenge is the prestigious book: ‘’Insider’s Guide – How and Where to Photograph Birds in Southern Africa’’, by Isak Pretorius, sponsored by SA Hunters.

SA hunter members who do not belong to Facebook and also want to participate in the challenge can send an email to sahuntphoto@gmail.com and send photos with #birds in the subject line, along with all the photo information as stated above and your personal information.

The October photo challenge’s theme is #Cats and members can share photos as from the 1st of October.

The photo challenge rules are simple:
* It must be photos of a cat/cats (from house cat, wild cat to big cat, in other words any cat) and must have been taken by yourself,
* Mark the photo #Cats (in order for admin to easily find it at the end of the month),
* Include all the photo information:
-specie
-where
-when
-camera or smartphone model
-camera adjustments (F-stop, ISO, shutter speed).

Photography club member’s photos are also eligible to appear on the group’s Facebook page cover.

Every 2 weeks, the admin chooses a new cover photo from all the photos placed on the photography club’s Facebook group. The admin will look for photos that are striking and exceptional, a horizontal ratio, with sufficient space for wording.

The Photography Clubs’ latest page cover is the spectacular colorful photo of a Cape Glossy Starling between aloe flowers taken by Joe Bester.

SA Hunters Amateur Photo Competition

The 2021 round of the SA Hunters Amateur Photo competition comes to an end, end of September and the overall winners for the year will be announced at the end of October. The 2022 round of the photo competition starts again in October 2021 and will end at the end of September 2022. December and January will be assessed as one month.

The entries for the month of August once again reached a record number of 142. In total, 52 awards were issued. Eight gold DSLR/ML recognitions were awarded to the following members: Pieter Johann du Plessis (098227), Herman Fouchè (024124), Sasha Mulder (085537), Rachelle van Niekerk (103311), Pierre JP van der Berg (023848) received 3 golds and Joe Bester (112512) received 2 golds. There were also 14 silver awards, 12 bronze, and 5 highly recommended acknowledgments.

In the smartphone division, there is for the very first time this year, a gold award was earned by Sasha Mulder (085537). The rest of the awards for the smartphone division included 7 silvers, 3 bronze and 2 highly recommended acknowledgments.

The categories for entries are as follows:
1) Conservation in action (DSLR/ML or smartphone division)
2) Plant and animal life (DSLR/ML or smartphone division)
3) Our cultural heritage (DSLR/ML or smartphone division)

Send entries to sahuntphoto@gmail.com with the following information:
1) Name and surname.
2) SA Hunters Member Number.
3) Contact telephone number.
4) Category under which the photo is entered.
5) Title and description of the photo.
6) Place where the photo was taken.
7) Camera and Lens Model/Smartphone Model.
8) Metadata may not be blocked.
9) No signature, watermarks, filters or frames allowed.
10) Photos must be 2 megabyte or bigger.

SA Hunter Photography Training

Part of the initiative to promote photography in the Association is training. Regularly, photo tips are placed on the photography club’s Facebook page.

The 2nd online sessions with the theme ”Placement, Crop and Composition”, already took place with 20 participants over 2 sessions. Participants learned a lot and are taking their photography to the next level, evident in the submissions they entered in the photography competition.

The next online sessions with the theme ‘’Exposure Modes’’ takes place on Friday, 1 October from 19h00 to 21h00 and will be repeated on Saturday, 2 October from 15h00 to 17h00 via zoom. To register for one of the online sessions, send an email to sahuntphoto@gmail.com with the date of your choice. Online sessions are free to SA Hunters members and Photography Club members.

Workshops will be offered from October, but subject to the Covid-19 circumstances. Dates will be announced at the end of September. Management negotiated a substantial 25% discount for SA Hunters members. The two-day workshop costs R2800 for members and R3800 for non-members. So, it is beneficial for family and friends to join the Association to use this benefit. Only eight people will be accommodated per workshop. Space is therefore limited and interested parties should send a knowledge of interest to Marette Bennett to avoid disappointment. Branches who want to host group workshops should also contact Marette Bennett. SA Hunters members who prefer individual private training are eligible for 15% discount on the regular price of R4800-00.
