3 May 2022
The hunting season has arrived and once again members can visit their favourite hunting grounds without any major restrictions. The first shots have been fired over the weekend and the meat is being processed. The cooler evenings might be a sign of a cold winter ahead
Structure of newsletter
We start with the new, essential information first, followed by the regular news.
Therefore, members can get up to date with fresh news first and read other information later.
HuntEx went well, considering the short notice period to prepare for the event. 277 exhibitors participated and about 21 000 visitors attended over three days. The organisers had only ten weeks since January 2022, to present this event. Thank you to Adriaan Woudstra that achieved a near miracle. Nearly all firearm dealers complained about limited stock, which was evident at HuntEx. We are looking forward to return to our bigger show in 2023.

Foot and mouth disease
Due to the outbreak of Foot and mouth disease on 56 properties in five provinces i.e., Limpopo, Gauteng, Northwest, Free State, and KwaZulu-Natal strict regulations are imminent on the transport of cloven-hoofed ruminants and their meat.
On 11 April, Minister Didiza issued `n media release confirming that 56 farms had been placed under quarantine due to the Foot and Mouth disease outbreak. However, quarantine does not apply to entire districts where these farms are located. The current transport restrictions in Limpopo and KwaZulu-Natal will remain for now.
We advise members to check the status of farms where they intend to hunt. The situation can change rapidly. Although the current outbreak seems to be under control, the disease can spread quickly. Certain species are resistant to the virus and may only have light symptoms which are difficult to spot.
Following a meeting on 20 April, Minister Didiza and the livestock industry issued a joint statement on the impact of the current Foot and mouth disease outbreak. Members are urged not to transport live animals from infected areas without complying with the relevant protocols. The joint statement is available here.
Municipal rates on game farms
More local authorities have changed their policies regarding municipal rates and taxes applicable to game farms. The new policy regards game farms as commercial entities and not agricultural land. This can result in rates and tax increases that are fifteen times higher than before. We advise landowners to look out for any notices in this regard and to submit written comments on such developments.
Hunting of elephant, black rhinoceros, and leopard
On 21 April 2022 the temporary injunction on the hunting quota of elephant, black rhino and leopard was replaced by an interdict by the Cape High Court. The Humane Society International’s court action results in at least R300 million loss in income for the hunting and wildlife sector in South Africa, of which 60% would have been set aside for anti poaching operations. It is highly unlikely that the Humane Society will foot the bill for this essential and urgent measures.
- Dedicated hunter and sport shooter status
Members with dedicated hunter and/or sport shooter status are reminded to update their activities on the SA Hunters online member administration system. They can also use the App which was developed for this purpose to keep track of activities for annual maintenance of dedicated status that ends on 31 October each year.
- Waiting period for licences and renewals
It is general knowledge that huge delays are experienced with the application of both new and renewals of competency certificates and licences. The SAPS and CFR performance requirement for finalising these applications is 90 days.
The Parliamentary Portfolio Committee for the Police has scheduled a Firearms Forum for 1 June 2022. SA Hunters want to obtain clarity on the waiting period for competency certificates and licences. The Association developed a questionnaire that members that have been waiting for more than 90 days for competency certificates and licences, can complete.
Follow the link below, sign in on your profile on the member administration system, and complete the questionnaire by 27 May 2022. Your cooperation will be appreciated.
- Delivery of magazines
Since the complete collapse of the Post Office’s services, we have been receiving more complaints from members whose magazines have not been delivered, or arrived very late.
Media24 has contractors that do hand deliveries in cities and large towns. SA Hunters will be using this service to deliver magazines to approximately 7 000 members. This hand delivery service is independent from the Post Office. We advise members to choose this home delivery option. Please check that your physical address is correct on your profile on the SA Hunters member administration system, or send a query to firstname.lastname@example.org or email@example.com
