The SA Hunters Vaaldriehoek Branch is once again hosting its popular Girls with Guns shooting day for women at the Ballistic Beast shooting range in Parys on 19 September. This event is more than just a shooting day: it will be filled with excitement, challenges, socialising, and new friendships!
This is an opportunity for women of all ages and skill levels to experience shooting in a safe, supportive, and enjoyable environment. Participants can test their skills on different ranges and in various disciplines, including pistol, shotgun, .22, AR and rifle.
Whether you are an experienced shooter or handling a firearm for the first time, there is something for everyone. In addition to the shooting activities, participants can look forward to fantastic prizes, surprises, a chance to socialise and meet other inspiring women who share the same passion.

SA Hunters Congress 2026
It is time to begin preparations for the 2026 Congress. This notice is the first in a series regarding Congress matters, in accordance with the requirements set out in the SA Hunters Constitution.
The SA Hunters 2026 Congress will be held virtually on Saturday, 7 November 2026 at 08:00.

Overberg Branch celebrates 20th anniversary
The Overberg Branch celebrated its 20th anniversary on Wednesday, 26 August, at the Erinville Golf Club in Somerset West.
After a warm welcome from Justus Harms, Regional Coordinator for the Western Cape, members took a nostalgic journey through the branch’s history, from its beginnings as a satellite branch to the establishment of the fully fledged Overberg Branch.
Photographs displayed on two large screens reminded guests of the hard work, passion and continued support that the branch has provided to the surrounding community. Gerhan Archer, President of SA Hunters, addressed the approximately 100 guests on the Association’s activities and affairs. He thanked everyone who contributed to the branch’s establishment and growth, and for their dedication to the branch and the community over the past 20 years.
The Overberg Branch is particularly well known for the enormous contribution it made several years ago to the drought-stricken community of Sutherland. The branch mobilised people in its region to collect livestock feed and food for people in need, which was transported by truck convoys to the farming community in the Overberg.
A major highlight of the event was the presentation of awards to Emile Visagie and Edwin Anderssen, who have been members of SA Hunters for 52 and 45 years respectively. This is certainly a milestone to be proud of.
The anniversary celebration formed part of the branch’s annual general meeting. Members were updated on the highlights of the past year and plans for the future. The current committee, led by Jacques Supra, was unanimously re-elected, confirming members’ confidence in its leadership. Boetie Kirchner, Manager: Hunting, Branch and Membership Affairs, presented awards to members for their achievements on the shooting range, as well as to range officers who faithfully fulfilled their duty during the year. One of the many highlights of the prize-giving was the presentation of the floating trophy to the top-performing junior. This year, the trophy was jointly awarded to siblings Evan and Annabel Mose.
Our sincere thanks to Jacques Supra and the entire Overberg Branch for their selfless dedication over the past 20 years and for the example they set for everyone, particularly through their outreach initiatives to neighbouring communities in times of need.
Unique collection of bird drawings available
The African Gamebird Research Education and Development Trust, following its dissolution in 2015, donated some of its valuable assets to SA Hunters, including several cardboard containers, each containing 48 bird illustrations. (See accompanying photographs.) Only a limited quantity of these illustrations was printed at the time.
SA Hunters is now making this special and unique collection available at R1,000 per container of 48 illustrations.

MOU between SA Hunters and the Botswana Wildlife Producers Association
South African hunters are expected to have more hunting opportunities in Botswana from 2027, following an agreement signed between SA Hunters and the Botswana Wildlife Producers Association.
The initiative stems from discussions that SA Hunters’ Vice President: Hunting Affairs, Dave Hayter, held with the Botswana delegation at the AWCGF in Zambia in 2025. The aim was to make more hunting opportunities available in Botswana and, in doing so, contribute to the effective management of wildlife populations. Although Botswana is already a popular hunting destination for both trophy and utilisation hunters, the Botswana delegation said it was not enough to manage wildlife populations adequately.
In March 2026, SA Hunters’ Chief Executive Officer, Basie Bergh, and Dave Hayter travelled to Gaborone to explore the proposal further. Discussions during the visit made it clear that this collaboration could create valuable opportunities for both parties.
After further discussions and correspondence, the parties signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). The agreement is expected to make new hunting opportunities in Botswana available to SA Hunters’ members from 2027.
More information on how members can take advantage of this opportunity will be made available early in 2027.

Northern and Southern Inter-Branch Team Shooting and Presidents’ Shooting Championships 2026 Concluded
The Northern and Southern Inter-Branch Team Shooting and Presidents’ Shooting Championships were held over two weekends in August. Riemland Branch hosted the Northern Championship on 14 and 15 August at the Danielsrus Shooting Range near Bethlehem, where 35 teams competed in the Inter-Branch Team Shooting Competition and 132 individual shottists participated in the Presidents’ Shooting Competition.
Grysbok Branch hosted the Southern Inter-Branch Team Shooting and Presidents’ Shooting Championship on 21 and 22 August 2026 at the Bilson Shooting Range near Humansdorp. Thirteen teams competed in the Inter-Branch Team Shooting Competition, while 52 individual shottists took part in the Presidents’ Shooting Competition.
National shooting championships for the rest of 2026
- Northern Shotgun on 12 September at Wattlespring shooting range, hosted by the Pretoria East Branch.
- Southern Shotgun championship on 19 September at the Valley Gun Club, Paarl. Hosted by the Tafelberg Branch.
- Junior championship on 2 and 3 October at the Excalibur shooting range, Welkom. Hosted by the Sandrivier-58 Branch.
- Multi-discipline sport shooting championship on 9 and 10 October at the military Practical Shooting range, Eeufees Road, Pretoria, hosted by the Centurion Branch.
- Southern Shooting Sport championship on 16 and 17 October on the Belville shooting range. Hosted by the Tafelberg Branch.
- Northern Shooting Sport championship on 23 and 24 October at the Excalibur shooting range, Welkom, hosted by Sandrivier-58 Branch.

MEMBERS WITH DEDICATED HUNTER AND/ OR SPORT SHOOTER STATUS
A large number of our members with dedicated status still have outstanding activities for 2026.
We remind members that they have 2 months left until 31 October 2026 to report their activities to maintain dedicated hunter and/or sport shooter status for 2026.
SA Hunters has 12 625 dedicated hunters, of which 7 902 have reported sufficient activities for 2026, while 4 723 members with dedicated hunter status must still comply.
There are 11 581 dedicated sport shooters, of which 5 934 reported sufficient activities for 2026, while 5 647 members with dedicated sport shooters status must still comply.
Members can report activities on their personal profile in the member administration system on our website.
OR download the SA Hunters App on your mobile phone to upload and report activities on your mobile phone.
Members are responsible for keeping their status up to date by uploading activities to the system. Just enter the date and place where you participated. There is no need to submit targets or other proof.
If, for any reason, you are unable to report sufficient activities for the year, please contact the office so that we can assist you.

Roadblocks check bush pig and warthog transport permits on the N1
With the recent roadblocks on the N1 just north of Pretoria, some hunters highlighted their lack of knowledge regarding the required transport permits for bush pig and warthog. Several hunters had carcasses confiscated and destroyed.
SA Hunters is authorised by the Director of Animal Health, in terms of the Animal Diseases Act (Act No. 35 of 1984), to issue permits for the transportation of warthog and bushpig carcasses for own use. You need this permit when transporting warthog meat or carcasses to or from Limpopo, Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Northwest, or parts of KwaZulu-Natal.
This facility is available free of charge to any paid-up member of SA Hunters who is a landowner with warthogs on his/her property. Only two simple steps are required to register a farm before the landowner may issue permits. To obtain authorisation through this online process, you only need internet access, a computer, and a printer.

Northern Cape Hunting and fishing licences in a jiffy!
Hunting and fishing licences in the Northern Cape have been available digitally since 1 August 2026, making it much quicker and easier to obtain your licence. The process is also mobile-friendly.

SA publishes quotas for hunting of CITES-listed species
The hunting and wildlife industry’s long-term contributions to conservation and ongoing efforts to protect wildlife have created a strong foundation that enabled the Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment to publish the quotas for the hunting of CITES-listed species on 31 August.
This prioritisation of conservation ensures the effective protection of natural habitats and safeguards the survival of these species. Because this conservation model has been so successfully established, it enables responsible and sustainable utilisation within this framework.
The SA Hunters and Wildlife Conservation Association (SA Hunters) fully supports this approach, as income generated from the quotas ultimately also stimulates the rural economy, particularly in communities where these species thrive as a result of conservation efforts. SA Hunters has an amateur photography club on Facebook open to anyone who supports its activities and initiatives. The aim of the club is to promote nature and wildlife photography and provide a space to share photos. Please note, this is not the place to share hunting photos. All photos are subject to approval by the page administrator.
Every two months, we announce a new photography challenge with a specific theme, giving members the opportunity to showcase their creativity and photography skills. Participants may use a smartphone, DSLR, or mirrorless camera. The best photos are selected after the closing date, and the winner receives a book prize.
