RESPONSIBLE FIREARM OWNERSHIP – OUR FOCUS

SA Hunters supports its members in complying with the legal requirements to own and use a firearm. The Association represents members’ interests on relevant national forums and in legal processes towards legal firearm ownership.

Our firearm helpline has dedicated staff to answer members’ queries on firearm-related matters such as licence applications, competency certificates, and endorsements to accompany their licence applications.

An integrated, online member administration system provides members with easy access to store their information regarding firearms, ammunition, hunting, and sport shooting records on the system under their personal profile.

Motivation

SAPS requires a comprehensive motivation from the applicant to explain the reason for wishing to possess the firearm and for what purpose it is intended. The motivation is submitted together with the application for a firearm licence.

The motivation must indicate whether the firearm will be used for hunting or sport shooting. If it is for hunting purposes, the motivation must include, amongst others, the following information:

  • location and type of terrain where the applicant plans to hunt with the firearm (longer distances over open plains, or shorter distances in a typical bushveld environment)
  • type of game to be hunted: small game or large game
  • explain why the firearm and calibre are suitable for the intended purpose

If the firearm will be used for sport shooting purposes, the motivation must, amongst others, indicate the following:

  • occasional sport shooting or dedicated sport shooting
  • venue and level of participation
  • type of sport shooting exercises
  • suitability of the calibre for the type of sport shooting activity
  • relevant characteristics of the firearm that makes it suitable for sport shooting

Endorsement

An endorsement is an official document that SA Hunters issues to members in support of a firearm licence application. It confirms that the specific firearm in question is suitable for the purpose for which the applicant is motivating, but it does not replace the motivation itself.

SA Hunters issues endorsements free of charge, within 24hours, for members who have signed and submitted the application themselves. The Association does not issue endorsements at the request of or to a third party. As soon as it is issued, the member receives an SMS message that the endorsement is available to download on his/her profile on the online member administration system.

Endorsements are issued for the following categories according to statutory prescripts:

  • .22 Rimfire Rifles and Semi-Automatic Rifles
  • Dedicated Sport Shooter
  • Occasional Sport Shooter
  • Dedicated Hunter
  • Professional Hunter
  • Occasional Hunter
  • Handgun Hunting
  • Self Defence

Motivering

  • geleentheid sportskiet of ʼn toegewyde sportskiet
  • plek en vlak van deelname
  • tipe sportskietoefeninge

  • Toegewyde Sportskiet
  • Geleentheidsportskeit
  • Toegewyde Jag
  • Prefessionele Jagter
  • Geleentheidsjag
  • Handwapenjag
  • Selfverdediging
