2 December 2024
Dear colleagues
This is my final newsletter to you. After 18 years of service – first as a board member and then as CEO for the past decade – I will be stepping down from my role at SA Hunters on 29 November. I am deeply grateful to each member for your patience and for allowing me to dedicate myself to this role. I took on this responsibility largely because I truly enjoyed it. I hope that the members of SA Hunters have found value and benefit in my contributions to the Association.
Karien and I are moving to Nelspruit on Monday, 2 December. We will focus on the things we love and matter to us: family and friends, nature and the environment, travelling through our beautiful country, and of course, our grandson, who lives nearby.
I want to take this opportunity to thank the members for their support over the past 18 years. I believe that we all serve the best interests of our Association, and work for the benefit of our members. Thank you to the board of SA Hunters for their cooperation in serving the members’ interests.
Lastly, thank you to the SA Hunters’ staff members, each of whom plays a unique role and, together as a team, genuinely cares about delivering the best possible service to our members.
You are welcome to phone me and if you visit Nelspruit, feel free to stop by.
Kind regards
Fred Camphor

The shop remains open slightly longer to allow members to make late Christmas purchases.

Legal firearm ownership is one of the main focus areas of SA Hunters. The Association provides a comprehensive support service to its members to ensure that they always act within the confines of the firearms legislation, whether they are hunters or sport shooters. SA Hunters has a dedicated firearms help desk to answer questions and assist with training requirements; applications for competency certificates, firearm licences, renewals and endorsements; storage permits; and temporary import/export permits.
Visit the Application Process for Firearm Licences page for everything you need to know about legal firearm ownership.
The national shooting committee approved amendments to the shooting rules during the shooting summit on 20 and 21 September 2024. These amendments will come into effect on 1 January 2025. The revised shooting rules, along with the regional and national shooting programme for 2025, will be sent via email to the relevant individuals shortly.
The Northern Cape has amended the process for applying for hunting and fishing licences. Applications are now exclusively online. Click here to learn how to apply for a licence online. Send proof of payment to DAERLlicences@daerl.co.za using the serial number of the hunting/fishing licence as a reference.
The revised hunting regulations for Mpumalanga for 2025 have been published and are available here. Members are reminded to take note of the dates for the open hunting season for certain species and to plan their hunting activities accordingly. Click here.
Botha’s Lark is a small brown bird that probably falls in the category of an LBJ (little brown job) but this species, which is endemic to South Africa, is facing extinction. With only an estimated 340 of these birds left on the escarpment of the Mpumalanga grasslands, the species needs all the help it can get. SA Hunters’ birders can come to the rescue by supporting an artwork initiative – Small Art for Botha’s Lark.
