YOUR community - OUR FOCUS

Community Outreach

SA Hunters’ members are an integral part of their communities where they establish close connections with business and landowners where they hunt or conduct other activities. It comes as no surprise that SA Hunters’ branches reach out to communities in need and provide whatever support might be required.

There are numerous examples where branches extended a helping hand to people, their livestock, and even wildlife in areas such as Sutherland that suffered from prolonged drought. Branch members rely in on the generosity and compassion of their own communities to collect donations to bring relief to those in need.

Gemeenskapsdiens

Objective

To provide drought relief in drought-stricken areas nationwide in collaboration with relevant stakeholders and the public.

SA Hunters

  • Collaborate with various organisations, including farmers’ associations, to assess the needs in the region.
  • Raise awareness about the impact of the drought and the needs of people and animals.
  • Mobilize our members and the public for donations and operational support.
  • Coordinate drought relief operations.

Doel

Background

SA Hunters’ members are an integral part of their communities and establish close connections with the people wherever they go hunting. For instance, members of the Overberg Branch that frequently hunt on farms in the Sutherland area, decided to assist farmers in this district in keeping their wildlife and livestock alive in areas suffering from prolonged drought where no or very little rain had fallen in five years or more. Animals were hand-fed to save them from starvation. Initially, the focus was on rescuing animals, but many families were struggling severely, and the assistance was extended to provide food to deserving families.

The branch management collected donations of animal feed and money from business and farming communities in the Overberg region and transported them to the Sutherland area.

Other branches, such as the Kamdeboo Branch, provided similar drought relief. Farmers are the frontline custodians of our natural resources and make a significant contribution to the protection of natural habitats and wildlife populations. It is the farmers who first experience the challenges of environmental changes such as droughts. By supporting farmers that take good care of natural resources, hunters contribute to the conservation of areas that they enjoy visiting for their annual hunts.

The social and emotional impact of goodwill projects like this is difficult to quantify because they affect both people and animals. These initiatives make a difference to every worker earning a wage and to the truck drivers covering thousands of kilometres to load and deliver feed. It brings hope to people when extreme circumstances threaten their livelihoods.

Agtergrond

Get Involved

Every member can get involved. There are opportunities for organisations to join hands and make a meaningful contribution. Drought relief offered by the branches set a valuable example that encourage others to undertake similar initiatives.

  • Members interested in getting involved in this project can contact their branch chairpersons and/or conservation coordinators in their area.
  • Contact the project coordinator to assess the needs.
  • Contributions include supplies, equipment, time, and money.
  • Participate and make a difference in the lives of people and animals.

Raak betrokke
