2 May 2024
Dear colleagues
We stand at the beginning of the 2024 hunting season. Although we haven’t sent out many fresh updates in newsletters, quite a lot has happened, and we strive to keep our members informed about recent events and matters.
Ticket purchases to the Kalahari Hunting Competition close on 3 May. Please make use of this last-minute opportunity to buy yours and stand a chance to win this wonderful hunting experience. Also have a look at the new tiger fishing competition below that was launched at HuntEx2024
I have already informed members in a special newsletter that I plan to retire by the end of 2024. The Board has started the process of finding a successor as Chief Executive Officer for SA Hunters. The advertisement for the position is available here.
Kind regards
Fred Camphor
SA Hunters: CEO
HuntEx2024 took place at the Gallagher Convention Centre from 26 – 28 April, attracting close to 31,000 visitors over the three days. SA Hunters’ stall was a hive of activity. 450 members stopped by to update their data. More information about the prize winners will be announced at a later stage. We must first get the office back in order, return all the stock and be ready to work and provide services to our members before we get to the fun stuff.
SA Hunters has designed a sport shirt to celebrate the association’s 75th anniversary. The shirt is made of polyester material and is similar to the shirts worn by the staff at HuntEx2024.
It is only available on order at R400 per shirt. For size options and orders, click here.
The SA Hunters shop also has several other items available to commemorate the Association’s 75th anniversary.
These include a quality tin mug (R90); porcelain coffee mug (R80); black golf/shooting range towel (R90); embroidered caps in grey, light blue, and khaki (R110); printed caps in navy blue (R60); and refrigerator magnets (R35.)

Wildman, a well-known franchise with branches nationwide, is opening a brand-new store in Pretoria. SA Hunters and Wildman have already been working well together in various areas. This store will include a 100m shooting range and two handgun shooting ranges. Please keep an eye on the news for the official opening of this store.
Although SA Hunters does not take political positions, we urge members to vote on 29 May. We realise that it is hunting season, and the day will most likely be declared a public holiday. However, it’s important that we, as responsible citizens, also play our role in electing a government that makes and enforces the laws we must live by. Eligible voters who cannot vote at their registered polling station on election day can apply for a special vote at registertovote.elections.org.za/voter/specialvotes/applications
We invite members to visit the SA Hunters Shop at stands 7 and 8 at Nampo from 14 to 17 May. Look out for our special offers on ammunition, firearms and a range of other products and accessories. Members qualify for a 10% discount on selected items.

Legal firearm ownership is one of the main focus areas of SA Hunters. The Association provides a comprehensive support service to its members to ensure that they always act within the confines of the firearms legislation, whether they are hunters or sport shooters. SA Hunters has a dedicated firearms help desk to answer questions and assist with training requirements; applications for competency certificates, firearm licences, renewals and endorsements; storage permits; and temporary import/export permits.
Visit the Application Process for Firearm Licences page for everything you need to know about legal firearm ownership.
The activity year runs from 1 November to 31 October of the following year. Members are encouraged to keep their activity reports up to date.
SA Hunters accepts any two of the following activities towards retaining dedicated hunter status:
SA Hunters accept any three of the following activities to retain their dedicated sport shooter status:
Learn more here about the conditions and requirements that dedicated hunters and dedicated sport shooters must meet to maintain their status.
The 2024 rules for regional and national shooting competitions are available on the SA Hunters website. There is a separate section with specific rules for each shooting discipline. For easy reference, the rule modifications from 2023 to 2024 are highlighted in yellow.
SA Hunters’ project that markets accredited hunting packages among its members is already quite well-known. According to reports on social media, many hunters are misled by fraudsters who advertise non-existing hunting opportunities.
With this project, the association puts its members who own hunting farms directly in contact with members who are hunters. In this way, the interests of both game farm owners and hunters are protected. Paid-up members who own hunting farms can contact Boetie Kirchner at boetiek@sahunt.co.za for more information about the hunting destinations project.
Some packages are sold out and new packages where added. Keep an eye on this page for continues updates.
Members are reminded to take note of the various permit requirements of the relevant countries when transporting raw meat or biltong from Namibia to South Africa. There is also a total ban on transporting wild pig meat. Read more here about the prevailing restrictions and requirements and who to contact for assistance.
SA Hunters thanks members for completing the survey on the sightings of vervet monkeys and baboons. Over 400 questionnaires were received. CITES has identified both species for a Non-detriment Finding (NDF). An NDF is a scientific risk assessment that determines the adverse impact of exports on the survival of the species in the wild. It provides valuable information on the number of monkeys and baboons seen on farms, the extent of damage caused, and the management of the species to be used in the NDFs and policy positions.
Our members’ contribution on SA Hunters’ Wildlife Sightings App is an important source of information used by the South African National Biodiversity Institute to review the conservation status of mammal species on the Red Data List. Members can install the App on their mobile phones and participate in this ongoing project. Read more here under the Conservation in Action heading.
Our members have supported the collection of data for the national leopard survey by recording sightings of these animals on various platforms. For the past two years, this information has helped scientists to determine the distribution and habitats of leopards and their impact on livestock and the environment. Read more here about how you can also contribute.
SA Hunters has provided feedback on the draft national biodiversity economy strategy published by the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment on March 8, 2024. While the association generally supports the objectives of the strategy, SA Hunters has identified significant shortcomings in the process of drafting this document and the potential implications of certain aspects of the strategy that have not been properly considered. Read here for a summary of the association’s feedback.
The conservation, utilisation, and trade of five wildlife species are outlined in a policy document from the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment on which SA Hunters recently commented. This policy applies to elephant, white and black rhinoceros, leopard, and lion. It particularly focuses on certain practices deemed unsustainable. Read more here about SA Hunters’ response and written comments on this policy.
The SA Hunters’ Shop thanks every visitor (members and non-members) who visited our stand in Hall 2 at HuntEx2024 from 26 – 28 April. Your support contributed to our success. We realised that many visitors were still unaware of SA Hunters’ shop in Derdepoort, Pretoria, where we stock a wide variety of ammunition, firearms, bullets, casings, and other hunting and shooting accessories. We invite you to visit the SA Hunters’ shop and see for yourself. Visit our webpage for further information on special offers. The WhatsApp channel is available here

If you are a hunter, you most probably have a favourite recipe that you could be famous for. You can even be our first SA Hunters game meat chef. This is a long-term project to encourage members to get involved.
We plan a dedicated section on our website and our Facebook page to share members’ cooking talents. Send your recipe including a short background (e.g., it was your grandma’s recipe), a photograph of you and your dish, the ingredients and method. Any recipe is welcome as long as game meat is one of the ingredients. Send it to boetiek@sahunt.co.za or marette@sahunt.co.za
The Freddy Hirsch Group are sponsoring hampers to give away in our game meat recipe challenge. The sooner you enter your game meat recipe, the better your chance is to win one of these hampers.
The Freddy Hirsch products (click here for product list) are now available in the SA Hunters Shop. Send an email to shop@sahunt.co.ca to order. The products will shortly be available in the online shop.
The 2024 Photography Competition is currently underway and running smoothly. We have received several impressive buffalo photos for the new category, and members find the new entry method very convenient. All the changes made to the competition are thoroughly outlined in the information and rules.
You can also take a look at the photographs that already received awards in different the categories in 2024.
