4 March 2024
Dear colleagues
Following a hot and uncomfortable February 2024, our activities are gaining momentum. We have already held 14 regional shooting events on available Saturdays. Suddenly, we are experiencing an extremely busy period.
Sadly, we had to say goodbye to one of our great stalwarts in the hunting, shooting, agricultural and rifle community. Oom Thomas Bredenkamp, owner of Promark, which was well known for the Steven Hamilton range of outdoor clothing, passed away on 7 February 2024, Read our tribute to Oom Thomas here.
Kind regards
Fred Camphor
SA Hunters: CEO
Over the past month, a rumour has circulated that the Central Firearms Registry has imposed a moratorium on the temporary export of firearms to Mozambique, Lesotho, and Eswatini (formerly Swaziland).
Various organisations have issued notices about it. SA Hunters did not respond to it as there was no truth in this rumour. Applications for temporary export permits are being processed and issued in the usual manner.
An international wholesaler approached SA Hunters for information regarding the availability of their ammunition and reloading components and the popularity of their products in South Africa.
The wholesaler sent a questionnaire to us and requested shottists and hunters to complete it. Members can complete the questionnaire anonymously, but there are prizes as an incentive to participate in the survey, in which case members need to provide their names and contact details. We request members to take a few minutes to complete this questionnaire.
During the past month, an article was published claiming that the UN’s High Commissioner for Human Rights had stated in a declaration that South Africa should ensure that children are not allowed to kill animals for trophies. According to this report, children should not be taught or allowed to hunt.
This report is complete nonsense, and the author is blatantly ignorant. Simply ignore this report if it ever reaches you. It is a lie spread by animal rights groups.
Well-known herpetologist, Johan Marais of the Africa Snakebite Institute, will present a Level 1 course at Inyathi Park on 16 March. The course includes snake identification, first aid for snakebites and snake handling with equipment. Get the course info and costs here. Members of SA Hunters qualify for a 10% discount.
On 17 March a more advanced snake handling course will be given. Get the course info and costs here. Members also qualify for a 10% discount on the price of this course.
There are a few spaces left on both courses. Book your seat with Michelle Pretorius.
HuntEx will take place at the Gallagher Exhibition Centre in Midrand from 26 – 28 April 2024. It is the
largest showcase and gathering for hunters, firearm enthusiasts, and outdoor enthusiasts in the
southern hemisphere. Dricus du Plessis thought HuntEx2023 was the best, ever. Hear what Dricus says about HuntEx.
As usual, SA Hunters will have a strong presence at the show where members can renew their
membership, sign up for activities, or pop in to meet the staff. Diarise these dates and buy your tickets online. Don’t miss out!
Kalahari farmers reported excellent rainfall so far this season with lush vegetation that will no doubt fatten up the resident antelope. Hunters have two months left to enter the SA Hunters Kalahari hunting competition valued at R100 000 which gives the winner and three friends the opportunity to each hunt one gemsbuck bull and four springbuck rams from 22- 26 May.
Just imagine the mouthwatering steaks and biltong that these animals will produce!
It is super easy to enter. Buy a ticket for R100 for one chance to win in the lucky draw. There is no limit to the number of tickets you buy. The more tickets you buy, the better your chance to win the lucky draw.
The prize includes your accommodation, fuel, food and drinks, day fees, hunting bakkie and slaughter fees. Each hunter will also receive a gift pack.
Buy your tickets now! You do not have to attend the draw. We will phone you if you win!
The activity year runs from 1 November to 31 October of the following year. Members are encouraged to keep their activity reports up to date.

The 2024 rules for regional and national shooting competitions are available on the SA Hunters website. There is a separate section with specific rules for each shooting discipline. For easy reference, the rule modifications from 2023 to 2024 are highlighted in yellow.
Several new classes have been created for shotgun shooters to allow more women, juniors, and older shooters to participate in separate classes on a more equal footing. These classes are junior ladies, veteran ladies, super veteran ladies, masters men, and masters ladies. Read the Comprehensive Rules for Shotgun Shooting here.
The format of SA Hunters’ regional shotgun shooting events for competition purposes has been standardised. For more information, please read the document Regional and National Shooting Competitions here. Branches that organise shotgun shooting competitions should take note of the new format.
African swine fever broke out early in February in the George area. We remind hunters and landowners that they will need transport permits to transport wild pig carcasses (warthog and bushpig) in certain provinces. More information here.
The Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment’s Directorate of Animal Health has extended SA Hunters’ authorisation to issue permits for the transport of processed wild pig carcasses and meat. The permit is granted under Regulation 20 of the Animal Diseases Act No 35 of 1984. Read more here.
Members of SA Hunters who are landowners and wish to issue transport permits, first need to register their farms on their personal profiles on SA Hunters’ online member administration system. Follow the step-by-step process here. Watch the short video here.
The hunting of game birds and other animals is regulated in each of the nine provinces in South Africa through hunting regulations published annually at the beginning of the hunting season in the official provincial gazette. The hunting regulations aim to manage the utilisation of wildlife to ensure sustainable resources for future use.
As each province compiles its regulations, it is difficult for hunters to stay informed about which regulations apply at a given time and in a specific province. Sometimes regulations also differ from region to region within the same province.
Click here for a summary of the regulations or go to each province for the latest proclamations.
SA Hunters’ project that markets accredited hunting packages among its members is already quite well-known. According to reports on social media, many hunters are misled by fraudsters who advertise non-existing hunting opportunities.
With this project, the association puts its members who own hunting farms directly in contact with members who are hunters. In this way, the interests of both game farm owners and hunters are protected. Paid-up members who own hunting farms can contact Boetie Kirchner at boetiek@sahunt.co.za for more information about the hunting destinations project.
SA Hunters calls on members to participate in a survey on the distribution of baboons and vervet monkeys. SANBI is undertaking the survey on behalf of the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment to determine if exports of these animals pose a risk to the species.
The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) is conducting a survey on the distribution of baboons and vervet monkeys on behalf of the Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment. This survey is highly important.
CITES has identified both species for a non-detriment finding (NDF). An NDF is a science-based risk assessment to determine whether exports will have an adverse impact on the species’ survival in the wild. This includes the export of hunting trophies.
The process that South Africa uses to conduct an NDF involves a questionnaire of 26 questions, nine of which focus on the biology, distribution, status, population trends, and major potential threats facing the species. The remaining questions focus on the management and incentives for conservation and protection measures.
It is important for landowners or wildlife managers to participate in this survey to ensure that the assessment is based on sufficient information. In most provinces, baboons and vervet monkeys have been declared as problem animals. Inadequate information from the survey could result in changes in the rules regarding the management and utilisation of the species. It takes approximately 7 minutes to complete the questionnaire, and it is done anonymously.
We request members to please complete this questionnaire.
Pangolins are exceptional animals whose survival in nature is under serious threat due to illegal trade and habitat loss. It is also listed on the IUCN’s Red List of Seriously Threatened Species.
Thanks to the dedication of individuals such as Francois Meyer, a member of SA Hunters (Hardekool Branch), in collaboration with conservation authorities, there is hope that Temmink’s pangolin can survive and thrive. Find out how you can help to protect the pangolin here.
The 2024 Photography Competition is currently underway and running smoothly. We have received several impressive buffalo photos for the new category, and members find the new entry method very convenient. All the changes made to the competition are thoroughly outlined in the information and rules.
You can also take a look at the first set of photographs that received awards in different categories in 2024.

This month, Danie Momberg shares his famous recipe for beef/game boerewors with members.
Go view our game meat recipe page for this recipe and more.
If you are a hunter, you most probably have a favourite recipe that you could be famous for. You can even be our first SA Hunters game meat chef. This is a long-term project to encourage members to get involved.
We plan a dedicated section on our website and our Facebook page to share members’ cooking talents. Send your recipe including a short background (e.g., it was your grandma’s recipe), a photograph of you and your dish, the ingredients and method. Any recipe is welcome as long as game meat is one of the ingredients. Send it to boetiek@sahunt.co.za or marette@sahunt.co.za
The Freddy Hirsch Group are sponsoring hampers to give away in our game meat recipe challenge. The sooner you enter your game meat recipe, the better your chance is to win one of these hampers.
