Changes to the management structure at SA Hunters

I’m pleased to announce some changes to the management structure at SA Hunters.

With André van der Merwe retiring in November 2025, the position of Manager: Branch, Member, and Regional Affairs became vacant. After careful consideration, the Board has decided to assign these responsibilities to Boetie Kirchner. Boetie will now manage both Hunting Affairs and Branch, Member, and Regional Affairs. For any enquiries in this regard, please contact Boetie at 082-770-9378 or boetiek@sahunt.co.za

André also managed certain shooting disciplines. Andries Fourie has been appointed as Assistant: Shooting Affairs and will oversee all SA Hunters shooting disciplines and related matters under the guidance of Nic Roets. You can reach Andries at 071-604-1825 or andries@sahunt.co.za

Nic Roets remains directly responsible for international and informal shooting matters and for the overall shooting portfolio. Nic can be contacted at 082-809-9018 or nic@sahunt.co.za

Foot-and-Mouth Disease

Overview of Foot-and-mouth disease

By Boetie Kirchner

What is foot-and-mouth disease?

Foot-and-mouth disease is a highly contagious, sometimes fatal viral disease that affects cloven-hoofed animals. The disease occurs worldwide and poses a serious threat to animal production. Although many countries have been free of foot-and-mouth disease for several years, it remains a major cause for concern. Strict biosecurity measures are essential to prevent outbreaks.

Humans are normally not susceptible to the foot-and-mouth disease virus, and it should not be confused with the so-called “hand, foot and mouth disease”, which does occur in humans.

Symptoms

Typical symptoms of foot-and-mouth disease include a high fever, as well as sores and/or blisters in the mouth, leading to excessive, slimy salivation. Sores and blisters may also occur between the hooves; these often rupture, causing lameness.

Due to pain, animals lose their appetite, and their body condition declines rapidly. In dairy cattle, a sharp decrease in milk production is observed. Although some species, particularly certain wildlife species, are more resistant and do not always show symptoms, the virus can persist in the animal and infect other animals.

While most animals eventually recover from foot-and-mouth disease, it can cause inflammation of the heart muscle and, in severe cases, lead to death, especially in young and weakened animals. Some infected animals show no visible symptoms but can still transmit the disease to other animals.

Control measures

Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development released a NATIONAL CONTINGENCY PLAN for the Control of an Outbreak of foot and mouth disease in the FMD Free Zone – click here.

This Contingency Plan is intended to provide strategies to contain, control and eradicate an outbreak of FMD in the area legislated as the FMD-free zone without vaccination in Table 1 of the Animal Disease Regulations R2026 of 1986. This document provides guidance on “best practice” regarding the implementation of prescribed disease control measures. Should there be a need to deviate from prescribed control measures, such deviations must be approved by the appropriate authority.

At present, we are also aware of a protocol in Limpopo that regulates the movement of live livestock and wildlife into, out of, and through the province – click here.  North West Province issued a similar protocol on 14 January but later withdrew it.

For the latest update on FMD in the Freestate province – click here.

To the best of our knowledge, there are currently no restrictions on the transport of game meat, provided it does not originate from an infected area.

Prevention

There are several simple, practical ways to limit the spread of the virus. Read more about how you, as a hunter and/or owner of a hunting destination, can reduce the risk – click here.

Biosecurity

The responsible and correct implementation of biosecurity measures plays a key role in preventing the spread of the virus. Consult your local veterinarian or state veterinarian for comprehensive guidelines on measures that will work best in your area.

Branches of SA Hunters that operate shooting ranges on livestock farms must confirm in advance with the landowner which biosecurity measures apply on the property concerned. Click here for examples.

Be cautious

SA Hunters appeals to members not to unnecessarily complicate the situation by accepting unverified information or rumours about foot-and-mouth disease as fact, and spreading them on social media or verbally. Please conduct thorough research beforehand on the area in which you plan to hunt and ensure that you are aware of the applicable facts and regulations.

Enjoy your preparations and the hunt!

Hunting and the Biodiversity Economy

Responsible hunting is a vital component of South Africa’s biodiversity economy. It generates sustainable funding for wildlife conservation, supports rural livelihoods and contributes to food security. Scientific evidence shows that hunting supports wildlife populations and protects habitats while sustaining millions of hectares of privately managed land that play a key role in protecting species and ecosystems. Responsible hunting supports conservation goals, strengthens the bio-economy and delivers meaningful economic and social benefits

Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species

South Africa’s submissions on plant and animal species to CITES COP20 yielded mixed results. The good news is that the bontebok was removed from Appendix II and two succulent species were moved from Appendix II to Appendix I, while the giraffe’s status remained unchanged. The conservation success for bontebok is a result of collaboration within the broader wildlife and hunting sector, as well as government, which provides the policy framework for conservation.

The facts about the impacts of lead on people and wildlife

As part of the National Lead Task Team, SA Hunters managers worked shoulder to shoulder with other conservation agencies, government and medical experts to develop a public website that provides scientific facts about the impacts of lead on humans and nature in December. Part of the work programme included a discussion session among hunters, farmers, guides and wildlife managers in the Lowveld on responsible carcass management when using lead-based ammunition, and the benefits of switching to lead-free bullets

Wildlife sector in conversation with President Cyril Ramaphosa

SA Hunters shares key challenges and priorities of the wildlife sector with President Ramaphosa at a multisectoral consultation in the North West Province, highlighting aspects related to policies, economic contributions, trade and governance, as well as the importance of meaningful public participation in shaping legislation affecting conservation and sustainable use.

Branches and Conservation

The conservation status of the African bullfrog (Pyxicephalus adspersus) is Least Concern, indicating it is not threatened. However, wetlands and the species that occur within them are among the most threatened habitat types. Therefore, it is important that we conserve these sensitive systems and their species. With the heavy rainfall, bullfrogs have once again made their appearance in the Heidelberg area. In the past, breeding frogs were frequently disturbed. Members of the Heidelberg branch were very busy protecting the frogs in December 2025 to ensure that the next generation of bullfrogs was not disturbed or removed by collectors.

Several branches were involved in relocating swarms of bees that had established themselves on building roofs, making people uncomfortable. The swarms were transferred to new beehives using environmentally friendly methods and relocated to safe habitats. The hives are continuously monitored.

Eastern Cape Sustainability Forum

We participated in the Eastern Cape Sustainability Forum, where we presented on the role that the wildlife sector plays in addressing biodiversity loss and climate change adaptation. Lizanne, the Conservation Manager, demonstrated to the audience how the money generated from the responsible use of wildlife is reinvested in conservation and restoration, providing sustainable funding towards a more resilient future for people and wildlife. Judging by the audience’s feedback, it was clear that they support the important role that the private sector, wildlife ranchers and hunters play in conservation. However, more work is needed to advocate for this.

iziNdlovu – A special offer to members

iziNdlovu klein

The newly released book iziNdlovu by conservationist Dr Div de Villiers and legal journalist Adrienne Carlisle captures the epic story of the infamous Ndlovu rhino poachers and the team that took them down. It is a non-fiction work that exposes the brutality of rhino poaching and how poachers use various methods, including rifles and the tranquilliser M99, often hacking the horn from rhinos that are still alive. The successful investigation, arrests, prosecution, and judgment of the “Ndlovu gang” are discussed in detail.

Our conservation manager, Lizanne Nel, attended the book launch, and Dr de Villiers agreed to make the book available to members at R200 plus postage (R60 with PEP and R110 with Postnet). Members can contact Dr De Villiers directly at div.devilliers1@outlook.com or 082-417-0155 and provide their SA Hunters membership number to qualify for the discount.
