Selling or Donating your Firearms

As fellow hunters, we understand the deep emotional value a hunting rifle can hold. It is not simply a tool. It carries a lifetime of memories, lessons, and traditions that are passed from one generation to the next. Every rifle tells a story – YOUR story.

There often comes a time in a hunter’s life when the question arises: What should I do with my rifles if I have no family or heirs interested in them?

To help you answer this important question, we invite you to consider the following options that can ensure your cherished firearm continues its journey in a meaningful way, making a real difference for others.

Sell to the SA Hunters Shop

You may sell your firearm to the SA Hunters Shop at a fair, market-related price. This ensures your rifle finds a new life in the hands of another responsible hunter who will value and treasure it.

Donate to our shop

You may choose to donate your rifle to our shop as part of our special youth programme, which gives young hunters who cannot afford to purchase a rifle the opportunity to apply for one. Your contribution can realise a young hunter’s dream.

Support training and conservation

Donated firearms can also be sold and the proceeds used to support youth training, shooting programmes, or conservation projects. In this way, your rifle will help keep our passion for hunting alive for future generations.

Why consider donating?

Continue our tradition: The rifle you donate may be the first step in a young hunter’s journey of responsible and ethical hunting.

Help the less privileged:  Not every young hunter can afford to purchase a quality rifle. Your donation can open the door for them to join the hunting tradition.

Promote safety and responsibility: All donated firearms are handled and transferred legally and responsibly, ensuring they remain in safe hands.

Leave a legacy: Whether through youth programmes, training, or conservation, your rifle can continue to make a meaningful contribution to preserving our hunting tradition.

If you have a rifle that you no longer use or do not wish to bequeath to someone, we encourage you to discuss alternative options with us. We respect every decision and treat each case with care and discretion.

Please feel free to direct any enquiries about the donation process, legal requirements, or how your contribution will be applied. Your rifle can continue to play a valuable role in shaping the future of hunting in South Africa.

Thank you for considering this opportunity to help sustain our hunting heritage and keep hunting accessible.

Dedicated Status Reports 2025

DEDICATED HUNTER OR SPORT SHOOTER STATUS FOR 2025

We remind members with dedicated status to register their activities by 31 October to retain this status.

Currently, there are 13,004 dedicated hunters, of whom 3,893 have not yet updated their 2025 activities. Additionally, 4,861 out of 11,797 dedicated sport shottists have also not yet reported sufficient activities for 2025.

To maintain dedicated hunter status, hunters must attend and record any two of the following hunting-related activities per year:

  • Any hunting trip
  • Attendance at any official SA Hunters activities, e.g., branch meetings, branch shooting days, or any other official shooting activity presented by SA Hunters. (Attendance at official SA Hunters activities is recorded via the branch’s tablet system. You only need to enter your membership number.)
  • Any other organised shooting activity where shottists sign a range register. This includes any private shooting or social shooting event at a non-accredited association, shooting club, range, or any other shooting event where a range register is completed.
  • Any other private or informal shooting practice on a range where no register is kept, e.g., at a friend’s farm.
  • Submission of a hunting report via the online member administration system.
  • One reloading activity for members who reload their own ammunition.
  • A visit to the annual HuntEx expo.

To maintain dedicated sport shooter status, shottists must attend and record any three of the following activities per year:

  • Any official SA Hunters shooting event at any branch (your own branch or as a visitor at another branch), regional, or national shooting event. (Attendance is recorded via the branch’s tablet system.)
  • Any shooting event at another accredited sport shooting association, e.g. SAPSA, Clay Target, SAPRF, Bisley.
  • Any other organised shooting activity where shooters sign a range register. This includes any private shooting practice or social shooting event at a non-accredited association, shooting club, range, or any other shooting event where a range register is completed.
  • Any other private or informal shooting practice on a range where no register is kept, e.g. at a friend’s farm.
  • One duty as a range officer.
  • One reloading activity for members who reload their own ammunition.
  • A visit to the annual Huntex expo.

Members can register their activities on their personal profile in the member administration system on the website or capture them via the SA Hunters mobile app. It remains the member’s responsibility to ensure their activities are up to date.

Members who, for any reason, are unable to report activities for the year may contact SA Hunters’ national office for assistance.

Conservation Highligths – September 2025

SA Hunters collaborate towards finding solutions for elephant conservation and management through our participation in the National Elephant Heritage Strategy and the National Elephant Indaba. We advocated for an ecosystem-based approach that considers habitat, climate, biodiversity, and community impacts, not just elephant numbers. Key recommendations included more autonomy for landowners, revising restrictive norms and standards, and amplifying community voices. Initial reports reflect these inputs, including provision for adaptive control measures such as culling and hunting.
