SA Hunters Shop Celebrates Continued Growth at HuntEx 2026

HuntEx 2026 marked another important milestone for SA Hunters Shop as we proudly participated in South Africa’s premier hunting and outdoor expo for the third consecutive year.

What started as a modest exhibition stand has grown into a major presence at the show, with our 2026 exhibition space expanding to almost 228 square meters, thanks to the incredible support from suppliers and loyal customers. It enabled us to showcase an extensive range of products and leading brands to visitors throughout the expo. We achieved our goal of providing our customers with a wide selection of firearms, ammunition, firearm-cleaning products, and accessories to fulfil their passion for hunting and sport shooting.

The continued support of visitors and customers contributed to our goal of becoming a one-stop shop for hunters and sport shooters in South Africa.

SA Hunters Shop remains committed to delivering the best possible service, quality products and expert advice to the hunting and shooting community. HuntEx allowed us to connect with like-minded enthusiasts, strengthen relationships and introduce new visitors to our shop.

Do not wait for HuntEx 2027 to see what we offer. Visit us at our permanent shop at Inyathi Park in Derdepoort, home to the renowned Nico van Rooyen trophy collection. Our store features a unique collection of nearly 200 wildlife trophies from around the world that pays tribute to our hunting heritage and wildlife from different continents.

As we continue to grow, our commitment remains unchanged: to serve South Africa’s hunting and sport-shooting community. We thank every visitor, client, supplier and supporter for helping make HuntEx 2026 another memorable success for SA Hunters Shop.

SA Hunters expresses compassion after storm damage

Vredendal
Gourits River

On behalf of SA Hunters, I express our sincere condolences and support to all our members who suffered damage during the recent heavy rains, strong winds, and flooding in parts of the Western Cape, Eastern Cape, Northern Cape, Northwest, and Limpopo.

While we are grateful for the much-needed rain and full dams after prolonged dry periods, we recognise the severe impact these weather conditions have had on many families and communities. For some, the storms have brought extensive damage, disruption, and hardship, affecting homes, infrastructure, farms, and personal belongings.

During this challenging time, we want to assure you of our support and compassion. The SA Hunters family stands together, and we trust that our communities will support one another.

We wish everyone safety, strength, and perseverance in the days ahead. May calmer weather prevail and bring healing and restoration to all who have been affected.

You remain in our hearts and prayers.

New fun shooting activity for all at Inyathi Park small calibre shooting range

We are very excited to share news about a new shooting activity we are hosting at the Nico van der Merwe small-bore shooting range in Inyahti Park. From 20 May 2026, for the next few months, we will be hosting a team fun shoot (two shottists per team) with .22 LR rimfire rifles on the third Wednesday of every month at 15:00.

What started as a friendly round-robin fun shoot between the Inyahti Park staff and the Baviaanspoort, Pretoria East, and Centurion branches has become a regular monthly gathering.

Judging by the enthusiasm and competitive spirit among the shottists, it soon became clear that this shooting event would not remain a once-off occasion. It eventually culminated in a final gathering where all shottists from the three branches gave their very best on the firing line. Only a slight adjustment was made to the shooting exercise (front rest only), which tested the shottists’ abilities. In the end, the day was a great success and thoroughly enjoyed by everyone.

The intention was not for this activity to become an official competition, but rather a friendly social gathering at the range. We mainly offer informal shooting events for the whole family.

We invite everyone who lives close enough and is able to join us to take part in this shooting activity, and we especially encourage families to participate. We would particularly like to involve women and children and expose them to this shooting sport. Training for juniors has already started, and there is room for further expansion.

The exercise is conducted with .22 LR rimfire rifles from a shooting bench, using both a front and a rear rest. The combined scores of both team members will determine the team’s final score.

For enquiries, please contact Andries Fourie at 012-808-9300.

The knives in this range are exceptional collector’s and functional items, showcasing the finest craftsmanship. Magazines digital

The delivery of the printed version of SA Jagter/Hunter and Man Magnum via the Post Office has completely collapsed.

In July 2025, SA Hunters conducted an opinion poll in the magazines to determine whether readers would be willing to read the magazine in digital format. It was encouraging that more members than expected participated in the survey, of whom 75% indicated that they are amenable to the magazine in digital format.
For the alternative options, please contact Michel at our offices.

Hunting Season 2026

It is winter and officially hunting season! Please note that the Northern Cape’s online hunting licence system is operational again. Watch the video for important information.

  • Download the permission document for hunting and meat transport here.
  • Follow the step-by-step instructions to register your property for SA Hunters’ online wild pig transport permit system. Step by Step.
  • Also look here at what SA Hunters’ accredited hunting packages have to offer.

The 2026 hunting season is not without challenges. Some of our members have already encountered criminal elements with fraudulent transactions and scams involving the online booking of hunting venues via social media, while ordinary theft is also becoming more common. Although the latter is not a new trend, criminals are using different methods. They target cold room facilities to steal meat and hunting camps where hunters’ firearms and other valuable items are kept. Make sure that firearms are always securely locked away in a safe when not in use. It is also advisable to have a handgun close at hand when hunters gather around the campfire at night.

Foot-and-Mouth Disease

The Minister of Agriculture, John Steenhuisen, indicated during a press conference on 5 May (Read the media briefing document here) that he intends to lift the disease management area in KwaZulu-Natal. The lifting was announced in the Government Gazette (Government Gazette link). Hunters must still follow the necessary protocols when visiting a hunting destination that has been placed under quarantine. The state veterinarian will inform landowners of the required protocols if their property is placed under quarantine.

Hunting Licences

North-West

New system for online licences/permits and regulations

DEDECT, the North-West Department of Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism, recently changed its online system for issuing permits and licences. The NIPAS system has recently been replaced with the CivicPal system: https://www.civicpalnw.co.za/

The transition, however, has not been without complications. Members experiencing problems with the new system are requested to report them to Boetie Kirchner at boetiek@sahunt.co.za

Read the new North-West hunting regulations here.

Northern Cape

The online system for hunting licences in the Northern Cape was temporarily out of service. It is functioning again. Members who already followed the proposed procedure during the service interruption can re-register their applications. They do not have to pay again but must provide proof of payment.

The system is easy to use:

  1. Visit the SA Hunters webpage here
  2. Click on the Ready to Star” link.
  3. Complete the online application form.
  4. A staff member from the Northern Cape Department of Environment and Nature Conservation will contact you to facilitate secure payment.
  5. Receive your licence quickly and hassle-free.

SA Hunters provides free training for range officers

Do you enjoy sport shooting activities and want to become more closely involved in your branch’s shooting programme? Then it may be time to become a range officer! As a range officer, you can make a valuable contribution, support fellow members, and help ensure that shooting days are conducted safely and professionally.

Members older than 18 years qualify to be trained as range officers. However, they may only serve as range officials under the supervision of an experienced and qualified range officer. From age 21, a member may serve as an independent range officer.

The training is free of charge and consists of both theoretical and practical components. SA Hunters’ range officer training provides discipline-specific instruction, including hunting-based shooting, junior shooting, shotgun shooting, and sport shooting, allowing range officers to receive training aligned with their interests and preferences.

Candidates must pass the theoretical examination before starting practical training. Trainers provide ongoing support to ensure that new range officers can perform their duties at branches with the necessary knowledge, skills, and confidence.

Qualified range officers play a key role in ensuring that firearm safety and shooting-range discipline are consistently maintained. At SA Hunters, the safety of shooters, staff, and all visitors on the shooting range premises is non-negotiable. Safety always comes first!

Although there is no financial compensation for range officers, many experience great satisfaction in helping to create and promote a safe and positive shooting environment for others.

Interested members can contact their branch chairperson or chief range officer for more information. Members can also log in to their personal profile on the member administration system and register for the course.

Winning Photo

Our winner for this challenge was Esme van Eeden Frylinck!

This photo’s composition is beautiful and it fits very well with the theme where it was requested that people send in photos of special nature that we sometimes miss.

A stalk of barley etched against the sunset is beautiful, and something we all sometimes overlook.

Congratulations Esme Van Eeden Frylinck with the exceptional photo!

SA Hunters has an amateur photography club on Facebook open to anyone who supports its activities and initiatives. The aim of the club is to promote nature and wildlife photography and provide a space to share photos. Please note, this is not the place to share hunting photos. All photos are subject to approval by the page administrator.

Every two months, we announce a new photography challenge with a specific theme, giving members the opportunity to showcase their creativity and photography skills. Participants may use a smartphone, DSLR, or mirrorless camera. The best photos are selected after the closing date, and the winner receives a book prize.
