Beyond the African Horizon

“Beyond the African Horizon” is a book of memoirs, a collection of the personal experiences and thoughts of a professional hunter while hunting and guiding hunters throughout Southern and Central Africa. It is a compilation of tales based on true events – no fiction! This book is not a “shot by shot” commentary of heroic claims, but rather a perusal rendition of what makes the true hunters different from the ordinary or multitude. It reveals the true hunting spirit, and disclose what happens in the mind and heart of a true hunter – that which he very seldom would admit, or talk about. SA Hunters members get a special discount on this book.

Kalahari Hunt 2026

Memorable Kalahari hunt rewards competition winner

The winner of the Kalahari Hunting Competition, Nico van der Westhuizen, and his three hunting companions, Barney, Kalaharie and Leon, enjoyed an unforgettable hunting experience in the Kalahari from 22 to 25 June.

The group arrived in Upington on Monday, 22 June, where they were welcomed by Boetie Kirchner (Manager: Hunting, Branch and Membership Affairs) and Bertus Burger, Chairman of the Kgalagadi Branch. From there, they travelled to Soetwater Farm, owned by Kobus and Essie Maritz, who hosted the hunt.

This year’s exceptional rainfall transformed the Kalahari landscape, with many of the iconic red dunes covered in lush grass. After settling into camp, the hunters received their welcome packs, tested their rifles on the shooting range and made final adjustments to their rifle scopes before the hunt began.

The hunting got off to an excellent start on Tuesday morning. By lunchtime, each hunter had successfully harvested a gemsbok. The momentum continued on Wednesday, with the group harvesting five springbok during the morning hunt. Following a traditional braai on the dunes, featuring fresh springbok liver and Aunt Essie’s famous egg sandwiches, the afternoon hunt added another seven springbok to the tally.

On Thursday morning, the hunters returned to the veld to complete the springbok quota. They also took the opportunity to harvest three additional springbok and one blesbok at their own expense, while several vetstertpersies were processed for the droëwors.

Beyond the successful hunting, the trip was defined by outstanding camaraderie, evenings around the campfire, excellent food and lasting memories shared among friends. The hunters all returned home safely, perhaps carrying a little more weight than when they had arrived!

SA Hunters extends its sincere appreciation to Kobus and Essie Maritz for their warm hospitality, as well as to the Kgalagadi Branch and everyone who contributed to making this year’s Kalahari Hunt another memorable success.

Members can already look forward to the 2027 Kalahari Hunting Competition. Keep your eyes peeled for the announcement when ticket sales open in November 2026. You could be the next lucky winner!

Youth Shooting Day, 13 June 2026

Pretoria’s young shottists show their mettle

SA Hunters hosted its fourth successful Youth Shooting Day at the Eeufees shooting range in Pretoria on 13 June 2026. This annual event brings together several organisations with a shared goal: to promote shooting sport among young people and expose them to new skills and challenges.

With the support of SA Hunters, SANSSU, SATRA, and this year also SAGRF, participants had the opportunity to take part in a wide range of shooting disciplines. The event not only sparked interest in shooting sports but also reinforced important values such as discipline, safety, responsibility, and sportsmanship.

Before sunrise, the excitement was already palpable. The coffee caravan ensured a warm start to the day, while registration proceeded smoothly from 07:00. Each shottist received a scorecard to be completed throughout the day at the various association stations. The challenge was to complete as many exercises as possible and achieve the highest combined score to be crowned the top shooter of the day!

The shooting range was alive with activity and energy:

  • SATRA and SAGRF shared the main range with shooting exercises at 25 m and 50 m.
  • SANSSU presented 10 m standing position and air pistol exercises.
  • SA Hunters hosted a 15 m kneeling position exercise using air rifles and .22 LR rimfire rifles.

A special word of thanks goes to Kobus Schoeman, Carel Viljoen, and Schalk du Plessis, who served as range officers, scorers, mentors, and even helped clean the grounds. Your dedication made the day’s success possible. We are proud of members who contribute their time and energy with such passion.

The results of the SA Hunters exercises showed that the youth are not only talented but also determined to learn, improve, and grow.

Thanks to every participant for your support. We look forward to welcoming more junior shottists at our next junior shooting sport event. Who knows, you may be the next top shottists!
