The court case about animal well-being

The implications of a definition for animal well-being in conservation legislation that refers to the mental health of all animals are concerning, as it could have far-reaching negative consequences, particularly for the wildlife, agricultural, and food industries. SA Hunters has already taken this issue to the highest level, even to court. A final ruling on the matter has not yet been given, but the Association remains hopeful for a sensible solution.

Draft National Elephant Heritage Strategy for South Africa

SA Hunters is participating in discussions and processes regarding the draft National Elephant Heritage Strategy, which has just been published for public comment. Proper management of elephants in South Africa is a complex issue due to the significant impact of elephant overpopulation on our environment and biodiversity. Members can also submit comments on the Draft National Elephant Heritage Strategy.

Conservation Policy for Lions, Leopards, and Cheetahs

Between 28 August 2024 and 21 November 2024, the government held 27 workshops across South Africa where the public and stakeholders provided input on the vision and objectives for the management of lions, leopards, and cheetahs in South Africa.

SA Hunters’ conservation office represented the association during this consultation process. Summaries of the input from the workshops are available on our website at here. We remain involved in the process, and members can submit input to the conservation office at lizanne@sahunt.co.za.
