RESPONSIBLE FIREARM OWNERSHIP – OUR FOCUS
The association provide the necessary support to our members for responsible firearm ownership and legal compliance. We represent their interests on relevant forums and legal processes. Our professionally manned dedicated firearm helpline assists members with relevant queries while the integrated, electronic member administration system allows members easy access to a personalized system where they can keep record of firearms, ammunition and their hunting and sport shooting activities.

Any person that intends to apply for a firearms license must be in possession of a valid competency certificate for the specific category of firearm or firearms that he/she intends to own. It is a prerequisite to undergo competency training provided by an accredited training institution such as SA Hunters. The competency certificate is issued by the SA Police Services.
Categories of firearms:
Any person that intends to apply for a competency certificate to own a firearm must comply with the following stipulations of Section 9:
– A South African citizen and at least 21 years old
– No criminal record
– No charge against him of negligent use of a firearm
– Must successfully complete the prescribed firearm competency training provided by an accredited training institution

If urgent reasons exist a person under the age of 21-years may apply for a competency certificate. (Section 9 (5) (a) and (b) Act 60 of 2000)
