Branch Accomplishments

The drought relief project of SAGHCA’s Overberg Branch started when Essie Esterhuyse and Frank Esterhuizen – both members of the management committee – wanted to deliver two bakkie loads of mealies to farmers in Sutherland. At that time, the drought in the Western and Northern Cape was taking its toll. Towns such as Sutherland and Fraserburg are remote and far away from main routes which place them out of reach from other drought relief programmes.

Former chairman, Justus Harmse, created awareness about the effects of the drought among members of the branch. In October 2017, they launched the SAHGCA Overberg Drought Relief Project. As hunters, these members hunt responsibly in the Sutherland district to put meat on the table. Therefore, it was a spontaneous decision to assist the farmers in the district that had been suffering from the drought for more than five years. Livestock and game weakened by the continuing drought can no longer walk and are being hand-fed. Initially, the focus was on helping the animals, but it became evident that many families could no longer feed themselves either. Therefore, the drought aid problem was expanded to help these families.

The Raptor Conservation Group identified the N17 near Devon, between Johannesburg and Ermelo, as an area that is critical for owl conservation. The grain that fell from trucks transporting grain to silos, attract mice, which in return, attract many owls. Four types of owls (555 in two years) have been killed by cars in this 30km stretch of road. It was suggested to start an owl restaurant project to lure the owls away from the road. The conservation group of Springbok Branch accepted the challenge and undertook to coordinate this project.

That was ten years ago. The team at Springbok Branch expanded its owl conservation work and involved other interested members and the broader community. Subsequently, more owl conservation initiatives were launched in other provinces. In 2018, the University of Pretoria embarked on an owl research project with Springbok Branch.

Wilgerivier Branch: Dasklip shooting range

During the past seven to eight years, Wilgerivier Branch developed the Dasklip shooting range into a functional and attractive facility for use by their members. This small branch with only 200 members invested about R500 000 to upgrade the shooting range. The money was raised over time through branch funds, donations, sponsorships and many voluntary man hours. SA Hunters also donated R32 000 towards the improvement of the shooting range – this donation is available to all SA Hunters branches under certain conditions.
