Inyathi Park News - May 2018

Versprei asseblief hierdie inligting so wyd moontlik na alle wapeneienaars. Gebruik gerus gemeenskap- en streekskoerante hiervoor.

I deliberately repeat the message above also in English

The Marico Bushveld Branch of SA Hunters and Orpen Wapens owned by well-known Ossie Penzhorn provides a custom-built rifle in 9,3 X 62 calibre built on a K98 action with Walther barrel, top grade Turkish walnut stock with 24 ct gold engraving as prize in our next fundraising effort to boost our legal aid fund and in aid of rhino conservation. This rifle is a collector’s item with a commercial value of R135 000. The rifle was on display at the Orpen Wapens stand at HuntEx. Should you want to see photographs of the rifle please click here.

For a small contribution of R50, or any multiple thereof, anyone stands a chance to win this beautiful rifle in a lucky draw.

Please make payment by EFT into the Legal Aid Fund of SA Hunters in multiples of R50. The Legal Aid Fund’s account is with ABSA and the account number is 9134305406. Please note that this is a different account number from the regular account used for paying in membership fees and other payments. When transferring the money, please use the following information as reference, with a space between the two entities:

  • K
  • Your mobile phone number

This competition is open to members and non-members because all firearm owners will benefit if the Constitutional Court judgement is in our favour. You may distribute this information as widely as you wish and even use community or regional newspapers.

3. Membership
On 31 May 2018 the membership of SA Hunters stood at 42 607 paid up members after the names of those members who did not pay their membership fees had been removed from the list.

4. Gerugte
Dit verbaas my soms hoe maklik gerugte posvat en soos ‘n veldbrand versprei.

5. Dedicated Status
By the end of May 2018, we already had 16 709 dedicated hunters of whom 7 219 are already compliant for this year by having recorded adequate activities. We similarly have 9 723 dedicated sport shots of whom 3 307 recorded sufficient activities to comply for retaining their dedicated status. Members have 5 months left to the end of October to record the required activities on their personal profiles on the E-Hunter system.

6. Sportskietnuus

Gallery Sporting Rifle
Of the 40 Gallery Sporting Rifle competitions scheduled for the year most have been concluded. To the participants in this competition, you have only a couple of chances remaining to qualify to be invited to the trials of this competition.

Presidentskiet Finaal Borgskap

International Shooting at Bisley in the UK
2018 was the first year SA Hunters presented an open invitation to sport shots to attend the international Phoenix shooting event in Bisley in the UK. A group of 14 individuals accepted and paid their own way to the event. They performed exceptionally well.

In the 5685 Gallery Sporting Rifle event, B Verster won the individual competition with a new Bisley and RSA record score at 291 of a possible 300 points. In the team competition the SA Hunters Teams came both first and second.

In the 5785 Gallery Sporting Rifle static competition members of the SA Hunters team took the second, third, fourth and fifth places.

In the Gallery Rifle Small Bore competition the SA Hunters team took the fourth position, even though this shooting discipline was a new experience for them all.

The team members that went to the UK were perfect ambassadors for SA Hunters as well as RSA and they managed to ensure very good interest in the IGRF World Championship shoot to be hosted in RSA in October next year.

A full report on the visit is available here.

7. Second SA Hunters Golf Day
SA Hunters will hold its second golf day on 8 June 2018 (Friday this week) at the Wingate Park Golf Club in Pretoria. You will find more detail here.

We will appreciate donations of items for the auction at the dinner after the golf day. Unused rifles, cases of matured red wine, 5 litres of whiskey, or good hunting books will make excellent items to be auctioned. Please open your hearts and support SA Hunters. Contact Nicky Uys about donations at nicky@sahunt.co.za

9. Hunting Affairs

Hunting Packages Available Nyala

There are still Nyala Bull hunts at R6 000 plus VAT available in Swaziland from the good friend of SA Hunters that manages a private reserve. These are not record book bulls but reasonably representative animals. This is a good opportunity for anyone prepared to take the trouble to arrange temporary rifle export and import permits and an import permit for meat and trophies.

For more information contact Johann van de Giessen at Johann@sahunt.co.za

Bird Hunting Available
We are now in mid-season of bird hunting. The sunflowers are getting ripe and the doves are flying well. Johann van de Giessen is arranging a bird shoot or two in the Free State and we are also looking for opportunities to do a waterfowl shoot in the Western Cape when the grain starts sprouting. Any members that could assist in this regard please contact Johann van die Giessen at johann@sahunt.co.za

Hunting in Namibia
We have just been informed that the Namibian authorities suddenly require you to bring along copies of the following documents for temporary importation of your firearms if you intend to go hunting there.

  • A copy of your passport (the page with your personal data)
  • A copy of your firearm licence (the front and back sides on the same page please)
  • A copy of your invitation to go hunt in Namibia.

The authorities at the border posts do not have facilities to make copies. Please prepare these copies in advance and take them along.

Thank you to Andrew and Brad and their teams for these donations. We highly appreciate it.

Air Arms also provided us with a donation of an Air Arms S 510 air rifle. Thank you very much to Claire, Jackie Snr and Jackie Jnr for your generous support of SA Hunters. We really appreciate this. This rifle was handed to Louis du Plessis who visited us at HuntEx to renew his membership.

11. Availability of S 365 Propellant
Many of our members reported unavailability of S 365 propellant at dealers recently. Koos Barnard spoke to Elmarie Zikmann of Rheinmetall Denel Munition that manufactures propellant in RSA. The rumours that Denel is in trouble and Somchem propellant will not be manufactured any more is exactly this ... a rumour.

Rheinmetall Denel Munition has no intention to stop manufacturing propellant in RSA and Somchem propellant will continue to be available in RSA. They had problems with supplying S 365 but this was temporary. Later this year, Rheinmetall Denel Munition will be distributing a new propellant not previously manufactured in RSA.

12. Verwagte Amnestie

13. History of SA Hunters
SA Hunters will be 70 years old in 2019. In 2016, we started with a process with Oom George Nell to compile the history of SA Hunters over this period with a view to publish a book in 2019, when SA Hunters turns 70.

We will appreciate any information on the Association, its activities, role-players and how the Association grew during the 70 years since its establishment. Oom George already received loads of information and documents provided to him by members of SA Hunters. Please be patient while we peruse the documentation for possible inclusion in the book. He will take good care of your possessions.

Unfortunately, Oom George fell ill and will not be able to continue with this assignment. We will make alternative arrangements and inform you accordingly. Meanwhile, members may continue sending is interesting and useful information for possible inclusion in the book.

15. NASP African Championships
The National Archery in the Schools Programme was brought to RSA by SA Hunters a couple of years ago. This sport grew in leaps and bounds. They held the African Championships last month. The South African teams have done extremely well. An edited programme on these championships was broadcast on Supersport 1 (Channel 201) on 8 May 2018.

17. SA Hunters’ own recipes
We are considering compiling our own SA Hunters recipe book. Some years ago at the first HuntEx we published, together with HuntEx a recipe book known as Die Geheime van die Ysterkombuis/Secrets of the Iron Kitchen. We want to do something similar and are looking for both the recipe as well as a hunting story to accompany the recipe.

Please provide us with your story (maximum 1800 words) as well as the recipe with all ingredients and preparation method. We will prefer meals that are easy to prepare on the fire using iron pots and/or pans or on a braai grid. Please send your contributions to dorothy@sahunt.co.za

19. Conservation

Acting on Environmental Crime
Our health and well-being depend on our environment. That is why protecting the environment is not just about saving animals and plants. It is also about protecting people’s lives and livelihoods. In South Africa we have laws that protect us and our environment against criminal actions.

In a new initiative to combat environmental crime a National Environmental Crime Hotline was created where anybody could report any environmental crime. Please make use of this hotline to report any environmental crime. National Environmental Crimes & Incidents Hotline (24 hours): 0800 205 005

Examples of environmental crime include illegal dumping of hazardous waste, illegal deep-sea fishing, smuggling of ivory, poaching and illegal property developments. To find out more and what you can do, click here.

International Expert Workshop on Non-Detriment Findings for Hunting Trophies
Spain, as one of the biggest importing countries of hunting trophies from Africa, arranged the International Expert Workshop on Non-Detriment Findings for Hunting Trophies of Certain African Species included in CITES Appendixes I and II.

The objectives of the workshop were to share, analyse and summarise different approaches followed by exporting and importing countries in Africa, the European Union and the United States of America, in relation to decisions on trade in hunting trophies of lion, leopard, elephant and rhino. It further provided an opportunity for open dialogue between representatives from the scientific community, conservation organisations, hunting outfitters, concessions areas, hunting organisations and governments from several African countries, as well as representatives from importing countries. These included the European Commission and the US Fish & Wildlife Service (USFWS).

Proposals for best hunting management practices were discussed in support of informed decision-making on the impact of hunting practices on the identified target species. SA Hunters’ manager for conservation, Lizanne Nel was invited to chair one of four working groups that focussed on elephant and rhino.

This  was a unique opportunity where hunters, concession managers and custodians of CITES-listed populations from various range states in Africa, that are in the frontline of conservation, could engage with senior decision-makers from the CITES Secretariat, the CITES Scientific Office of the European Commission, and USFWS. They could engage directly on the impact that CITES trade restrictions have on conservation of the affected species. Workshop results will be tabled to the CITES Animals Committee for their information.

Even though SA Hunters’ is optimistic as to the potential positive impact this process and planned future workshops could have on the future trade in CITES-listed hunting trophies, the reality is that CITES decisions are influenced by much more than scientific evidence.

SA Hunters will continue to engage on this issue and will in the coming months, engage with Department of Environmental Affairs in preparation for the next Conference of Parties.

Ground Hornbill
The manager conservation participated in the workshop to develop a Biodiversity Management Plan for the Southern Ground Hornbill. This bird is  an  apex  predator  and  is  one  of  nine  African  savanna  hornbill  species. This species is under increasing threat from poisoning and habitat destruction with its complex biology and large spatial requirements that contributes to its decline. The species is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. Members of SA Hunters can and already do contribute to the species’ conservation through habitat conservation initiatives and species monitoring programs. Through engagement with this process, SA Hunters will make recommendations as to how its members can contribute to the species’ conservation.

20. Ivoorprojek
Daar is reeds 62 messe verkoop.

The first set of commemorative knives available on order are known as the Doctari/Nico van Rooyen knives. Each knife is hand-made. Therefore, a waiting period of approximately three months from the receipt of your order and payment, to the date of delivery will apply.

Only 150 of these knives will be made and each knife will be numbered. Should you wish to order one of these knives please do the following. Transfer R5 500 to the account of SA Hunters by means of an EFT. The account of SA Hunters is held at ABSA with the account number 01443990077. The Branch Code is 632005. Please use the following reference: Knife and your Cell Phone Number. Please forward proof of payment to admin@sahunt.co.za.

21. Update your personal data
In collaboration with Media 24, SA Hunters is considering hand delivery of SA Hunter/SA Jagter magazines in the metropolitan areas. Media 24 already makes hand deliveries of their other titles. Should we switch over to this delivery method, it is very important that we have members’ correct residential addresses.
We request members, especially those living in the bigger metropolitan areas, to check and update their residential address details on their personal profiles on the SA Hunters system. This is how you should do it:

  • The direct link to update your address information is: https://secure.sahunters.co.za/MemberPersonalInformation.aspx
  • You will be required to log in with your member number and password. If this is the first time you are signing in, enter your member number in both the member number and password fields. The system will walk you through the process to provide you with a password.
  • If your smart phone is running on Android 5.0 or higher you can also use our app to update your address information. Download the app directly from the Android app store ,or search for ‘SA Hunters Members’.
  • After providing your current address information, remember to save the changes by pressing the ‘Update’ button (or the ‘Save changes’ button when using the app).
