Inyathipark Nuus - Oktober 2017

Dear Colleague,

1. SA Hunters Annual Congress

The SA Hunters annual Congress was held over the past weekend. The event started with a meeting of all Branch Chairmen on Friday morning followed by the Congress dinner on Friday evening, which included the annual awards ceremony. Our guest speaker was Dr Braam Joubert from Clocolan, who captivated the guests with his hunting stories and what he referred to as his love affair with the bush. It was a very entertaining talk.

The Annual General Meeting was held on Saturday morning. At the meeting of Congress, important changes were approved i.e:

Amendments were made to the Constitution of SA Hunters, and the revised Constitution is available to members under ‘SAHGCA Documents’ on the Online Member Administration system as well as here on our main webpage.

The Internal Rules of SA Hunters were redrafted completely with material changes made to ensure these rules align with the revised constitution as approved in 2015, with a few further amendments made in 2016 and 2017. The new Internal Rules is available to members under ‘SAHGCA Documents’ on the Online Member Administration system as well as here on our main webpage.

Material changes were made to The Disciplinary Code and Procedure, and the new version is only available to members under ‘SAHGCA Documents’ on the Online Member Administration system.

The awards policy was also revised with some smaller changes made. The new version of the integrated policy will be made available as soon as all the changes that were approved by Congress, have been incorporated. It needs to be noted that in the future policy changes such as this one would be approved by the Board and will no longer require approval by Congress.

The Management of SA Hunters thanks all delegates for their contribution towards the success of the Congress. We appreciate your time, the attendance and the preparation to make our work easy in this regard.

2. Hofaansoek

3. Dedicated Status for Junior Members (younger than 16 years)
We are regularly asked why junior members (younger than 16 years) who have completed the dedicated training, either as a dedicated hunter or dedicated sport shottists, cannot receive dedicated status.

The reason is because a person younger than 16 is legally not accountable yet. Once an individual is declared a dedicated member of an accredited association he or she may, on strength of being declared a dedicated member, apply for and be issued a firearm licence.

The Board (the Executive Committee at that stage) had decided in 2010, that SA Hunters would not issue dedicated status to a member if such a member could not be held accountable for being in possession of a firearm licence. Therefore, SA Hunters cannot issue dedicated status to junior members younger than 16 years.

When junior members complete the dedicated training, their results will be captured on the system, but SA Hunters will not accept an application for dedicated status until the individual becomes 16 years old. Once the member has turned 16, the application for dedicated status will be considered and the status issued.

4. Lidmaatskap

5. Retention of Dedicated Status
By the end of October 2017, which is the cut-off date for reporting dedicated status, we had 14 028 Dedicated Hunters and 7 474 Dedicated Sport Shooters that complied with adequate registered activities to retain dedicated status.

There are a further 3 335 Dedicated Hunters and 2 005 Dedicated Sport Shooters that still need to report further activity to retain this status. They are not compliant for this year. As a last attempt from our side to remind them to report the necessary activities, these members will receive a SMS and e-mail from us to inform them that they are not compliant. If they fail to report the required activities, their dedicated status will be terminated, and the CFR will be informed in writing that they are no longer dedicated members of SA Hunters. These members might be at risk of losing some of their firearms.

The requirements for retaining dedicated status, are:

Dedicated Hunters must report at least two (2) activities during the year from 1 November to 31 October to retain the dedicated status. Any hunting activity, SA Hunters Branch event or SA Hunters shooting event is accepted as appropriate activity.

Dedicated Sport Shooters must report at least three (3) activities during the year from 1 November to 31 October to retain the dedicated status. Any SA Hunters shooting event inclusive of one range officer duty qualifies as an appropriate activity.

Any SA Hunters Branch activity is usually recorded automatically if you enter your membership number on the Branch tablet.

Members must capture any other activities on the SA Hunters’ online Member Administration system. If you are not sure how to capture these activities, please read this message to guide you to capture the information.

Go to https://secure.sahunters.co.za/ to log into the online Member Administration system.

Members logging in for the first time, must type their 6-digit SA Hunters membership number in both the member no and password fields. The system will guide you through the password reset process. You will need to access either your e-mail or mobile phone number registered with us on your SA Hunters member profile to complete this process. After logging in, a link to the user manual is available at the bottom of your ‘Member profile’ page.

After logging in successfully the ‘Hunting and Shooting Activity Log’ option is 3rd from the top on the left hand menu. Look for the ‘Log new Activity’ button at the bottom of the ‘Hunting & shooting activity log’ page. Fill in the details of you activity and remember to tick the declaration at the bottom of the page before selecting the Update button (bottom right of the page) to save your activity.  Repeat these steps to log all your activities for the year.

SA Hunters will accept any shooting activity at another association or shooting club, if members completed an official range register and there is valid proof of participation in a shooting event. Such activities are reported and captured under the Activity type “Shooting event – Organised”

7. Books Available
One of our older members, Frikkie Bouwer, is at a point in his life where he starts to reduce possessions and go smaller. He has an impressive list of books on hunting and related subjects, some of which are unique collectables. You will find a list of the available books as well as the contact detail for Frikkie Bouwer here.

9. SA Hunters Participates in relevant Research
SA Hunters supports responsible wildlife utilisation and conservation. We base our decisions and policy positions on sound information and as such, we support and facilitate relevant research initiatives from reputable organisations in support of the wildlife sector. There are currently two research projects that we request members’ support by completing a questionnaire for each of the research projects. It will take you approximately 10 minutes to complete each questionnaire.
Your responses will be strictly confidential and only accessible to the researchers. SA Hunters will be recognised for participation in the research. Members will be informed of the results after completion.

Economic Impact of Consumptive Hunting
TREES (Tourism Research in Economic Environs and Society) at the North-West University, conducts research on the economic impact of South Africa’s local consumptive hunting. The research will assist the hunting industry in assessing the scope of the industry, its economic contribution, and the role it plays in wildlife tourism.

SA Hunters requested the inclusion of specific questions in the questionnaire to gather information on specific aspects to enable informed decisions. Completion of this questionnaire will ensure automatic entry into a lucky draw, which will have a hunt as prize. Please enter your contact details (email or cell number) at the end of this questionnaire to qualify for this opportunity. To participate and complete the online questionnaire, please click here.

The Role of Warthog, Bush Pig and European Boar in the transmission of Diseases to Humans
The University of Pretoria in collaboration with Ghent University in Belgium is investigating the role of Warthog, Bush Pig and European Wild Boar in the transmission of parasitic diseases to humans in interface areas in South-Africa. SA Hunters decided to support the research because some of our members hunt and consume the animals identified in the research topic. This research will assist in determining if potentially infected meat is a risk for human health. Interviews will be conducted with different target groups such as game farm owners, hunters, butchers and other consumers. We request members that hunt Warthog, Bush Pig and European Wild Boar to take 10 minutes to complete the questionnaire available here.

11. SA Hunters Accredited as Professional Hunting Association
By now, it is probably general knowledge that SA Hunters applied for and was indeed accredited as an Association for Professional Hunters. • Complete the application form.
  • Provide proof of a valid professional hunting permit/licence in at least one province or country
  • Pay the R200 registration fee

To retain this Status as Professional Hunters, members of SA Hunters must provide proof annually of continually meeting the requirements identified above.

Members of SA Hunters that want to obtain Professional Hunter Status and require endorsements to license their firearms under Section 16A of Act 60 of 2000 as amended, can apply for Professional Hunting Status by completing the application form and provide proof of the requirements. Please submit the completed form together with the required documents and proof of payment of the R200 registration fee to Petrus Swart at dedicated@sahunt.co.za

12. Haelgeweerskiet

Skakel Johann van de Giessen by 012 808 9300 of johann@sahunt.co.za
