Rhino poaching
Most South Africans are well aware of the rhino poaching crisis that threatens the survival of both the black and white rhinoceros. Proposals to allow for the national trade in rhino horn have been published by the Department of Environmental Affairs. Civil society and other interested parties were invited to submit comment on the proposed amendments to allow trade by 8 March 2017. The pro-trade and anti-trade lobbies share their respective arguments in the print and electronic media. Meanwhile, the poaching continues to satisfy demand for rhino horn from China and other eastern countries.

Recently, Jeremy Young and Kevin Hirten screened their film on this lethal trade, The Poachers Pipeline, at the Wilson Center as part of the DC Environmental Film Festival.

Comment by CEO, SA Hunters: SA Hunters supports the proposed strictly regulated trade in Rhino Horn as presented by DEA. We are of the opinion that it is simply impossible to protect every single rhino in RSA. With no trade at all allowed only the criminals make money from trading illegally in rhino horn. With legitimised trade the demand may be reduced and some money will be generated that could be applied to protect the species.

BEWARING IN SUID-AFRIKA

Renosterstropery in KNP

SA court case on climate change starts on 2 March

Tegnologie help weinig teen stropers

Role of UN platform to stop biodiversity loss

Biodiversity, the variety of plant, animal and microbial life on Earth, is still declining. For many years there have been calls for some sort of scientific body or initiative to be set up to encourage the international community to shoulder its responsibilities over biodiversity. In the scientific literature in particular, several authors argued that a more efficient and permanent organisation to convey scientific works to governments could help meet international commitments to stop biodiversity loss.

In 2005 a process was started that led to the establishment of the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services, IPBES. The IPBES was finally established in 2012 as a United Nations body. It recently published its first reports and has several others under way. Read the full version here
