Inyathipark Nuus - Februarie 2017

I deliberately repeat the part above in English:

Firearms with lapsed licences

During the past two weeks, there was a lot of noise following a case in the Western Cape where a man was found guilty of illegal possession of a firearm because the licence had lapsed. He was given a fine of R 10 000,00 or 5 year’s imprisonment. Half the sentence was suspended. The individual was originally charged with family violence in which the firearm was used. During the investigation, SAPS found the firearm, which licence had lapsed and subsequently charged the man.

Legal opinion is that, in this case, the SAPS acted wrongfully in filing the charge and that the magistrate took a wrong decision when finding the individual guilty and sentencing him. They should have been aware of the application brought by SA Hunters and should rather have deferred the case pending the decision of the High Court in this case.

Rumours were abound that the CFR instructed SAPS to start charging individuals whose firearm licences have lapsed. Any such action would also be wrongful.

Should any of our members know of any action against people who are in possession of firearms of which the licences had lapsed for any reason other than the firearms being used in criminal activity, we request that you inform us thereof as soon as possible.

Our advice to members who have firearms of which the licences lapsed and who did not apply in time to renew the licences, remains the same. Rather keep these firearms locked away safely and wait for the outcome of the Court Application to be heard on 25 and 26 April 2017 in the North Gauteng High Court.

2. Regshulpfonds/Legal Aid Fund

3. Retention of Dedicated Status
Activity reports to maintain dedicated status were due on 31 October 2016. We still have 1 230 Dedicated Hunter members and 1 132 Dedicated Sport Shooter members that did not report the required activities. We sent letters by ordinary mail to these members requesting them to update their contact detail because we suspect they do not receive e-mail or SMS messages.

Members that do not make use of this last opportunity towards retaining their dedicated status, will be reported for not having dedicated status and may risk losing some of their firearm licences.

We want to reduce the number of activity reports that we receive via e-mail and/or fax and request members to update their activity logs online.

4. SA Jagters Gholfdag
SA Jagters hou op 9 Junie 2017 ons eerste gholfdag by Wingate Park Gholfklub.

7. Zero Quota for Hunting Leopard in 2017
The Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) once again published a zero quota for hunting leopard in RSA in 2017. This decision wat not taken lightly and was based on advice given by the Scientific Authority. More information about the process that was followed in making this decision is available here.

8. Fotokompetisie

Wat maak jou jagtog soveel méér as net skiet.
  • My tak is die beste.

9. Bewaring/Conservation

Growing the Wildlife Economy
During 2016 SA Hunters participated with other industry members in the government-led Biodiversity Economy Lab to demonstrate how the wildlife economy, which is growing annually by an average of 9,3%, can outperform the general economy, which grows at only 1,8% per annum.

The sector adopted the vision: A thriving, inclusive and sustainable wildlife economy for the well-being of all South Africans. Several key initiatives (21) were identified to address challenges and opportunities to fast track growth in the sector. More information on the specific challenges, interventions and the initiatives in which SA Hunters is involved, is available here.

Rhino conservation
Members interested in sharing their opinions about rhino conservation policy are encouraged to participate in a research project from the University of Florida. This research forms part of an SA Hunters initiative to ”Close the Gap” between science and the industry. The survey will collect data about your preferences regarding rhino conservation and legalising the horn trade. Results from this research will be able to show the types of policies that will benefit both rhinos and the wildlife industry.

The findings from this research will be sent to the Department of Environmental Affairs, US Fish & Wildlife Service and international NGOs. You do not need to own rhinos to participate. The survey is available in English and Afrikaans and it is completely anonymous and confidential. It will take you about 15-20 minutes to complete the survey.

To participate in the survey, please visit:https://ufl.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_1OpiP86W3biu8At.

Should you have any questions in this regard, please contact Elena Rubino at elenacrubino@ufl.edu or +21 071 540 0385 or contact Lizanne Nel, SA Hunters Manager Conservation, at (012) 808 9300 or at lizanne@sahunt.co.za.

Collaboration in Southern Africa to promote responsible hunting:
The Manager Conservation was invited by the Ministry of Environment and Tourism and the Namibia Nature Foundation to participate in a workshop to develop a strategy to maximise the contribution of hunting towards conservation and sustainable development in Namibia. This workshop will be held during the next week.

Attention will be given to improve hunting regulations and to strengthen the link between South Africa and Namibia. This is an important consideration towards building a stronger southern African position in support of sustainable wildlife utilisation and the role of hunting in conservation and socio-economic development.

Lizanne will give a presentation on the consumptive hunting sector in South Africa and how the sector contributes to conservation, food security and economic development, as well as lessons learned in growing a strong formal consumptive hunting sector.

Inputs received from members on challenges they experience when hunting in Namibia will also be discussed. This workshop provides an opportunity to learn more about the Namibian programme to promote conservancy hunting to the benefit of rural communities.

11. SAJWV-lidmaatskap
