It will further determine the purpose you indicate on your firearm licence application and the information you need to supply.

Artikel 13-aansoek

  • Selfverdediging
  • Handwapen, haelgeweer
  • 1 vuurwapen

2) Training to meet competency requirements

A competency certificate may only be issued to a person if he or she successfully completed the prescribed test and knowledge of the Act, and successfully completed the prescribed training and practical tests in respect of the safe and competent use of a firearm.

3) Apply for firearm competency

A firearm licence may only be issued to a person that is in possession of the appropriate competency certificate. This is a SAPS requirement to determine if you are competent to own a firearm in accordance with Chapter 5 of Act 60 of 2000 as amended.

After the successful completion of the prescribed firearm competency training, you may submit your application for a competency certificate to own a firearm at the designated firearms officer (DFO) at the police station nearest to your residence.

4) Obtain dedicated status

If you want to possess more than four firearms, more than two handgun, a self-loading or semi-automatic rifle and more than 200 rounds of ammunition per licence, you must first apply for dedicated hunter or dedicated sport shooter status before applying for your SAPS competency.

4) Verkry toegewyde status

‘n Persoon wat meer as vier vuurwapens, meer as twee handwapens, ‘n selflaai- of semi-outomatiese geweer en meer as 200 rondtes ammunisie per lisensie wil besit, moet eers aansoek doen vir toegewyde jagter- of toegewyde sportskutstatus voordat hy vir SAPD-bevoegdheid aansoek doen.

6) Apply for temporary licence

If the application has been approved, but the issuance of the licence is delayed, the designated firearms officer  (DFO) may issue a temporary licence.

Black powder firearm

Any person owning or wanting to own a black powder firearm, must be in possession of a valid competency certificate. In terms of the Firearms Act, one does not require a licence to own a black powder firearm. However, the owner of a black powder firearm must be in possession of a valid competency certificate which is required to purchase powder for the firearm.

Swartkruitvuurwapen
